Survive *****
Being the first track on the album I gotta say, what a brilliant start! The lead singer(Cristina Scabbia) has an amazing voice and you can tell that she gives her 110 % effort in this track/album. I like the rhythm, being heavy metal/Gothic its going to be a bit deep for some, like my mum for example walked in my room and couln't stand the sound of it and she said its just noise, Well obviously it is just noise but to people that like this type of music it is more than noise...It's the best sound ever.
I Won't Tell You *****
This is just a smiply amazing track, everything about it makes me love it, The rhythm, The bass The drums The lyrics and especially the vocals. When I heard that these were the goth type of band I thought Oh great maybe they are like Within Temptation (Great Band check 'em out) but they aren't and In all honesty I prefer these (Lacuna Coil). Their music fits my moods perfectly and I bet they can for most people who listen to this band. There is a great riff in this track about 03:00 in and it is brilliant, It isn't like the fancy riffs you hear but it is certainly amazing.
Not Enough *****
This track is one of my favourites, you can really hear the gothicness in it with the piano, The Lyrics/Vocals are excellent and I don't think they could get any better on this album. I like the bass line in this track, I found it quite simple to learn and It didn't take me that long to be honest.
I'm Not Afraid *****
The rhythm in this track is flawless I hadn't heard anything so good in my life, And the vocals? WOW, they tune of the lyrics set an edge to the song which actually makes the song great with the tite, it creates a bit of tension within the listener. The beat is perfect as is the bass, Its a great track to listen to.
I Like It ****
This actually has a start the captures your attention because it doesn't sound like some thing this band would do, but they did it and they I can say have pulled it off because this is one of the best tracks on this album, The chorus is awesome and is the type to get stuck in your head. The beat and Bass i have learnt both and the Bass is quite simple drums...not so much.
UnderDog *****
This has a bloody awesome start, An awesome set of lyrics and some awesome vocals, Currently I am playing this bass line in a band piece for a school concert coming up, its not the best bass line in the world, but it is great This track is well worth listening to.
The Pain ***
This is a good track, but not one of my favourites. Im not so keen on the rhythm or beat to be honest, the band have done better, I still listen to it from time to time though for something to do.
Spellbound *****
This is one of my favourite tracks off the album, It gets the adrenaline pumping around the body right from the beginning and my cousins boyfriend said when they play it live its even better, I just wish I could go and see them. The vocals are superb in this track and make the lyrics great I think if they'd have done this track differently it wouldn't be that great. around 02:20 there is an excellent riff that really catches the attention of the listener.
Wide Awake ****
This is a lovely track at the beginningand when the acoustic guitar starts it's pretty awesome, The beat is like the cherry ontop of a tasty cake it sets it off nicely and I honestly think that if you wanted a gothic/Metal band with a female singer you won't find one as good as this band...Sorry Evanescence has to come second now I have heard Lacuna Coil.
The Maze ***
This is a good track, ithas a memorable beat and Rhythm with very Memorable chorus, The start sounds a bit like a japanese song but when it really kicks in...IT really kicks in good time.
Unchained ****
This is a great track, It has a great rhythm to it and the tempo is perfect. The riff is excellent and the vocals, The lyrics are brilliant and easy to remember. There isn't really much else to say apart from the fact...IT ROCKS!
Shallow Life *****
This is a great track, It is the album title and it completely stunned me, I didnt expect it to be this good as soon as I heard this track I knew I found a new band to latch onto, I get like that with a band that i really love (Avenged sevenfold for example) This isn't a heavy track but it's certainly amazing and a great listen too! Great to do as a vocal piece for an exam. The piano is n't that difficult to learn and even on its own it would sound amazing.
Oblivion (Bonus track) *****
Oblivion is really just a slow but amazng track an it is well worth listening to, The rhythm is just excellent and the vocals are outstanding.
All together I think this is a pretty god damn good album and I am going to get Lacuna Coil's other stuff soon so maybe I can review them. Totally recommended to those out there that love a bit of Gothic Metal, This is just what you could be looking for. :)
Advantages: Some good lyrics and riffs, interesting theme Disadvantages: Very 'samey-samey' and forgettable.
...this a concept album about... shallow life unsuprisingly. I, personally, think the tunes and lyrics are deliberatly simple to highlight this concept. It actually adds depth in an odd way. There are some joys to be had here, if we forget this is LC and focus on the album itself. 1. Survive. A fantastic opening and a riff that will instantly implant in your head. As I mentioned, Ferro seems to be here a lot, and I'll admit it, it does dampen the song ... ...previous track. 5/10 12. Shallow Life. I still can't like this one, no matter how much I want to. Perhaps it'll grow but it reminded me too much of 'The Pain'. I hope they avoid these types of song in the future. 5/10 Overall, there are some cracking tracks worth the price. LC have made an interesting concept here and there is nothing wrong with experimenting at all. However, I have hopes for the future, and after this foray in to new ideas, I think ...

This fifth album from the Italian gothic metallers, the feverishly anticipated follow-up to 2006's 'Karmacode', is a concept piece about the cult of celebrity and the ephemeral nature of 21st century living, and sees the band refining their trademark sound. These snappy, powerful, melodic songs, more concise and straight to the point than ever, are the very epitome of modern pop metal.
