Advantages: Totally amazing and boundary destroying Disadvantages: A bit strange sometimes, unflinching political message might scare people off
Good lord, where am i going to start with this album? Refused, previously a decidedly dodgy, Equal Vision by numbers hardcore band, totally redefined themselves on their final opus, and took most of the hardcore genre with them. The scene is still plagued by Refused copyists, but none of them are ever going to capture this spark.
Witness the opening salvo of "worms of the senses/faculties of the skull" - a minute of noise ... ...and ending with a Rage-esque buildup. It is an amazing way to open an album, mixing dischordant and scrambling instrumentation with Denis' characteristic (and frankly incredible) screaming conveying his usual political agenda: "I GOT A BONE TO PICK WITH CAPITALISM... AND A FEW TO BREAK!". Incidentally, Refused are one of the few bands who make political songs non-preachy or boring, and along with Dillinger Four, opened my eyes to a whole ... more

Witness the opening salvo of "worms of the senses/faculties of the skull" - a minute of noise gateways to well paced verses, exlpoding into a chaotic chorus and ending with a Rage-esque buildup. Incidentally, Refused are one of the few bands who make political songs non-preachy or boring, and along with Dillinger Four, opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking with songs like "deadly rhythm (of the production line)".
The album is weird, there's no denying that - bizarre xylophone & radio interludes are abound, along with the rather strange decision of recording the last section of "new noise" live - but it works oh so well when mixed with a newfound brand of intelligent hardcore. Best songs are hard to pick, but the totally amazing "new noise" has to get a lookin, along with their most accessible song "summer holidays VS punkroutine". Songs like this show that Refused haven't forgotten that the way to rope people in is to write a catchy chorus among all that destruction.
I'm pretty weary about giving this album so many 5/5 ratings, but i don't really know any other way to convey how stunning this is. It's not instant, and it's not \m/etal all the way through, but for anyone willing to mix a bit of thought with the thrashing, this is totally essential. The only drawback of course, is that like every good band in the world they've split up and i'll never get to see them live...
Advantages: Songs are sooooo well written Disadvantages: They've done better
...certain things is going to shape the way they play. This is still good, but it's not quite up to the standards of some of their earlier releases , such as 'Leche Con Carne' (1995) and 'Making Friends' (1997). Particularly good songs on the album, are no.s 1, 2 and 3, although every one is very well written. It was released in October 1999 and is around 45 minutes long (14 tracks). It also contains a cover of 'Fairytale Of New York' - originally performed ...

Advantages: An excellent album from Refused full of lyrical intelligence and musical depth. Disadvantages: Refused split up a full decade ago.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the release of 'The Shape of PunktoCome' album from Refused. Refused was a Swedish Hardcore Punk band and active between the years of 1991 and 1998. 'The Shape of PunktoCome' was the last album that the band would ever release, an album that marked a dramatic change from their earlier work and is considered by most to be the best album that the band ever released. Ten years on it is still an album which is held in extremely high regard, and several nods towards this album have been made from UK based bands in recent years. Adequate Seven had a track entitled 'The Shape of Funk toCome' on their 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' album, and Sonic Boom Six have a track called 'The Rape of PunktoCome' on their 'Sounds To Consume' EP. It is clear that although Refused as a band are long since ...
Advantages: A couple of bright points... Disadvantages: ... but they're far outnumbered by bad ones
It has to be said, Cypress Hill were never brilliant, every album they've ever done has some brilliant tracks mingling with decidedly bad ones. But be that as it may, they've always delivered the goods and never veered from their tried and tested formula. So what the hell bought on THIS monstrosity?
Now i am all for musical development - i recognise that sticking to the same style leads to stagnation and boredom. Some of my favourite albums ever, like "shape of punktocome" by Refused or "Dear You" by Jawbreaker, are the result of bands changing their styles, sometimes radically. But when Cypress Hill made the ill advised decision to go rap-metal, they forgot to write some good songs, and this is their downfall. Witness the one note riff of "can't get the best of me" - played by Dino Cazares apparently, but a five year old could ...
