Not many bands release 2 albums in 1 year in their entire career, but Queen did it in 1974. The year saw them build on their eponymous debut release in '73 with Queen II in which their rock-opera genes started to show. Later in the year, this album Sheer Heart Attack developed further on that theme, and what a great album.
The album opens with the sounds of a funfair and then launches into Brighton Rock - a 5 minute rock epic which tells of a holiday romance. The track features an instrumental solo from Brian May which was later to be featured in every live show for the rest of the band's career.
Next we have Killer Queen. Probably the best known track from the album and featured on Greatest Hits I. A song about a stylish French prostitute complete with finger clicking and swanky guitar.
Tenement Funster is a Roger Taylor penned and sung track which talks about the rock n roll lifestyle that the band were engrossed in at the time. That track segues beautifully into one of Freddie Mercury's best written heavier tracks, the double A side to Killer Queen - Flick Of The Wrist which tells of a con-artist. Layered vocals soar above the gritty guitar and drum beat and as a piano breaks the song down without a break, there couldn't be more of a contrast with the next track Lily Of The Valley. A piano based track where Freddie croons that he's searching for his love.
The first part of the album ends with Now I'm Here. The second and last track that was later featured on Greatest Hits I, this song again became a live standard. Written by Brian May while he was laid up in hospital earlier in the year.
The seond half of the album opens with a vocal yowl and In The Lap Of The Gods lowers us gently back into the musical landscape in front of us.
Stone Cold Crazy is over just as quick as it begins. A frenetic rhythm is laid down by Taylor on drums, and Freddie's vocals can barely keep up as they nearly deliver this musical heart attack! Again by extreme contrast, Dear Friends offers us piano and vocal. A Brian May penned tribute to a lost love.
The next track is a funky, poppy track about love or killing people - take your pick. The guitars are particularly noticeable on this track, and the vocals and flighty and happy in contrast to alot of the grittiness of the rest of the album.
Next, Bring Back That Leroy Brown is just bizarre. Telling the tale of an american gangster and big town playboy, the track is heavily piano based with a very funky beat underneath and it features a May ukelele solo! Unique!
Now things get serious again towards the end of the album. The sprawling She Makes Me is written by someone very much in love and wanting to do things right. It's sung by Brian May over a drawling musical landscape which comes close to white noise at times, but in a good way.
Finally - In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisted. Before Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions came along, this track became THE Queen anthem, and you just have to hear it once to understand why. A "Woah, Woah, La La Laaaa," vocal refrain marks out the choruses as something special and the song builds the album towards a tremendous climax and an explosion of noise after which you're left wanting a lot more. How this song was never considered for a single release, I'll never know.
I would heartily recommend this album to any fan of Queen or the glam-rock genre in general. A Night At The Opera might be their album masterpiece, but Sheer Heart Attack is a clear second. An album that feels like an album and not just a random collection of tracks. Buy it!
Advantages: Mercury and May at their best. Disadvantages: Can't think of any..

The release of Sheer Heart Attack came closely after the release of Queen II. It was recorded at a very difficult time for the band as despite their success they received very little income. Queen sacked their management shortly after the release of the album and took to the studio to record their masterpiece A Night at the Opera.
Queen and their production engineer Roy Thomas Baker had an extremely good relationship. The innovation ...

Advantages: Fantastic quality music, good range of the artists musical talent, THE BEST ALBUM COVER OF ALL TIME! Disadvantages: It isn't available on Hybrid SACD format as per Pink Floyd DSOTM, no CD TEXT on std release, otherwise none!
I first heard "SheerHeartAttack" back in 1977, before I was starting to get into Queen big time. My then best friend had bought it the day before and popped it round. I only had an hour to check it out and...totally dismissed it! The only memorable thing for me at the time was the intro to "Brighton Rock" which sounded like a fairground.
An that's the way it stayed for another six months..
Now the story continues when I saw it available at my local library- a brand new pressing which had come it that very day. So I borrowed it, took it home listened to it again, then again, and again. How stupid I felt. I was blown away-there was no going back. since then I've owned it on Vinyl, Japanese Viynl and then as a Japanese CD as a replica of the Vinyl release c/w lyrics and Japanese text. Now released again in Japan as part of a general ...

Queen's 6th studio album News Of The World was released in 1977 at a time when many critics started to feel that the band were beginning to lose direction. 1974's SheerHeartAttack and 1975's A Night At The Opera had both been operatic-rock masterpieces, while the 1976 follow up A Day At The Races wasn't quite as complete a package, but still contained some great tracks and was a pleasure to listen to.
The problem Queen faced is that they'd set their standards so high previously that they were almost setting themselves up for a fall if they produced an album even slightly less than perfect.
The other issue they faced was that the punk movement was now beginning to reach it's peak, pushing glamrock out of the limelight. It's quite apparent that Queen were conscious of this as they wrote this album.
WE WILL ROCK YOU - Is there ...
