The Hissing of Summer Lawns--went into retirement. Following the release of that year's Travelogue album, she denounced the music industry and at the same time announced plans to pursue her other passion: painting. Shine, Mitchell's 17th studio album and her first collection of new songs in almost a decade, is therefore something of a surprise. Inspired by the need to speak out against warmongering politicos and environmental myopia, Mitchell has written ten elegant, sparse songs that match idiosyncratic arrangements (think chamber folk merged with curious 80s drum sounds and painterly daubs of sax and guitar) with incisive lyricism and her classic story-telling technique. Opening instrumental "One Week Last Summer" sets an optimistic tone, but the album veers mostly between melancholy, introspection, bitterness and even misanthropy. Mitchell's voice is more cracked than it used to be--but there's no denying her passion, nor her continued ability to write engaging tunes. -- Paul Sullivan

Album Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (p.105) - "Delicate overture 'One Week Last Summer' could be an outtake from 1977's underrated DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER..."
Advantages: superb singer songwriter Disadvantages: takes a little patience to listen too
...This album from 1991 saw JoniMitchell and her ex-husband Larry Klein in the producer’s chair, for her first release in the 90’s.
The album opens with the atmospheric title track written in 1988 “Night ride home”.
The impression of the night is conveyed to the listener by the use of a sound sample, which is that of chirping cicadas, the sound effect runs for the whole length of the song. This sound is what holds all the instruments used on the track along with the signature sound of Joni’s acoustic guitar playing style. At the start of the track along with the opening lines “Once in a while, in a blue moon, there comes a night like this, like some surrealist, invented this, 4th of July, night ride home” as the artist finishes this line the sublime bass playing of Larry Klein begins adding...

...This collection came out in 1996, and it try's to put together the more popular of her tracks, with the likes of an artist like JoniMitchell no collection that a record company puts out is going to cover such a long and varied recording career as hers. The "Hits" compilation tries to cover the more popular tracks from Ms Mitchell. The more interesting album is the "Misses" collection released at the same time as this one.
The songs presented here have been re-mastered by the artist herself supervising the process, as a "HDCD" (high definition compact disc), giving the tracks a rich warm sound that brings out the detail that was lost in the previous pressings of her albums on C.D.
The problem I have with this anthology is that the tracks are not in Chronological order.
The running order is all over the place historically, we start...

...out of songs themselves. This conflicts with "Overture - Cotton Avenue" and "Otis & Marlena" - they are among JoniMitchell's best tracks and it's a shame she didn't do more to this effect....
