Advantages: Hummable Ballads Disadvantages: Too old fashioned for some
It is, of course, impossible to write anything at all about the 60s/70s group ProcolHarum without mentioning their fantastic song "A Whiter a Shade of Pale"...
...so I have mentioned it.
It is not on this album.
Right, on with the review in hand:
There are two versions of the album out there so be careful if, after reading this review, you feel inclined to part with your pennies.
The version of "A Salty Dog" I have has the following track list;
Side One: Homburg; She wandered through the garden fence; The milk of human kindness; The devil came from Kansas; A SALTY DOG; Magdalene my Regal Zonophone.
Side Two: Shine on Brightly; Boredom; Conquistador; Your own choice; Ramblin on; Pilgrim's progress.
It is the MFP (EMI) version with the serial number MFP 5277 Stereo.
A review of the other version, which is very ...
Advantages: Fantastic Songs And Lyrics Disadvantages: Only 10 Tracks
Baby The Stars ShineBright was the third Album to be released by Everything But The Girl and if their debut Album Eden and its follow up Love Not Money seem to be poles apart then Baby The Stars ShineBright sees the duo taking on a completely different theme yet again.
The title may seem a little odd but it takes its name from a Shirley Temple Film. The Album was released in 1986 and sees Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt trying their hand at Country style songs with a full Orchestra to accompany them.
If the first two Albums demonstrated just how versatile Everything But The Girl are then this Album delivered yet even more surprises. Tracey's voice is now stronger than ever and the way that both of them have matured shows through on every track. Earlier songs had already established them as a band to be reckoned with yet no one had ...
Advantages: A full experience not just a cuddly toy. Disadvantages: Star owners exclusive site is more for kids.
I've always been a sci-fi/fantasy fan and have long had a love of Dragons so when my sister presented me with a Shining Stars dragon last Christmas I simply thought she'd bought me a cute soft toy which would look great in my bedroom, it wasn't until she pointed out to me later on Christmas Day that, in one of those moments that makes you slap yourself across the forehead for your own stupidity, that the toy was just the start, the tag around the toys neck contained a secret code which, when logged onto an internet website, would allow me to name my very own star and have exclusive access to the Shining Stars website.
Russ, a well known soft toy maker, have teamed up with the International Star Registry with the Shining Star project to create a unique gift for children and grown ups alike. The dragon itself is 9 inches tall, has ...

Album Notes
Procol Harum: Gary Brooker (vocals, piano); Robin Trower (guitar); Matthew Fisher (organ); Dave Knights (bass); B.J. Wilson (drums). Producers: Denny Cordell, Tony Visconti. Reissue producer: Tony Rounce. Includes liner notes by Henry-Scott Irvine. Remaster adds three extra songs. Procol Harum's second album garnered high expectations, as it arrived on the heels of the overwhelming success of the single "A Whiter Shade of Pale." By the time of SHINE ON BRIGHTLY, the classic lineup of the band was fully in place. Gary Brooker's blues-based singing was the perfect foil for the majestic sweep of Procol Harum's two-keyboard attack (an approach employed by Dylan in the mid-'60s, and then fully explored by the Band) and Robin Trower's stinging guitar. The title number has retained its staggering beauty and power, undiminished over the decades. Symphonic in scope, the first six songs are all in the three-to-four minute range and mix the earthiness of R&B with the clean lines of classical music. "In Held Twas in I" is an ambitious sidelong piece that clocks in at nearly 18 minutes. Where other progressive outfits of the era following the Beatles' SGT. PEPPER'S album succumbed to music as fashion, Procol Harum backed up its inclinations with solid content.
Album Reviews
Record Collector (magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]mpressive...at its heart, the 17-minute 'In Held 'Twas In I,' a glorious mix of Brooker's extraordinary arrangement and Keith Reid's unique lyrics..."
