Advantages: Great songs, must-have in serious record collections Disadvantages: Some might not listen to it thinking it's "too folky"
For a quiet, unassuming man guitarist and singer RichardThompson has quite a number of claims to fame. For one he was instrumental (and vocal) in bringing about the great revival, or invention, of British folk-rock through his association with Fairport Convention. His refusal to be pigeonholed led to his departure from the band and then he hooked up with LindaThompson artistically and emotionally to create some fine albums before both things went pear-shaped. He is also one of Britain’s best-known Muslims, although unlike another well-known Muslim former singer/songwriter he does not proselytise or preach or advertise his faith. Apart from this, he has led a roller-coaster of an emotional life clinically, sometimes cruelly, documented through his music. And yet he can boogie with the best of them when he’s in the mood ...
Advantages: Accessible and easy to read Disadvantages: Short and adds nothing to his earlier works
A River out of Eden - Richard Dawkins
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Professo r Richard Dawkins is one of the worlds leading authorities on evolution and gene theory and a staunch anti-creationist thinker. He first came to public attention with his critically acclaimed 1976 book 'The Selfish Gene', a fairly controversial book in that it espouses the gene as the ultimate currency of life and consigned everything else as merely vehicles to be used for their ongoing survival.
In later books such as 'The Blind Watchmaker' and 'The Extended Phenotype' he revisited these themes and expanded the arguments, often confronting earlier challenges to his work as well as long held religious and social beliefs. Although you are likely to find these books in the Popular Science sections of bookshops they are equally ...
Advantages: An excellent read, hard to put down! Disadvantages: I have some concerns - see the review.
spending £20 each (and that's second-hand) on at this time. Then there's fiction books, and autobiographies specifically about self-harm. Ask me about any of these books and I'll tell you if they're worth reading or not.
After these books there's the autobiographies where self-injury is a theme, but isn't the main theme. Books in this category include Elizabeth Wurtzel's "Prozac Nation", and Nick Johnstone's "A Head Full of Blue". These books don't sit on my self-injury bookshelf (yes, I have a dedicated self-injury book shelf), and Linda Cain's "Out of the Dark" will join them on my main bookshelf.
I am specifically publishing this review today as tomorrow (1st March) is SIAD (Self-Injury Awareness Day).
The Story
I was really eager to get started reading this book. As with any autobiography with pictures I went ...

Album Notes
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Richard & Linda Thompson: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, dulcimer, accordion); Linda Thompson (vocals). Additional personnel: Stephen Corbett, Brian Jones (cornet); Stephen Barnett, Mark Cutts (trombone); Phil Goodwin (tuba); Pete Zorn (bass instrument, background vocals); Dave Pegg (bass instrument); David Mattacks (drums); Clive Gregson (background vocals). Recording information: Olympic Studios, London, England. The world's most underrated songwriter, although Thompson must tire of hearing it so often. Together with his ex-wife Linda they made a series of quite brilliant albums that garnered heaps of praise and minimal sales. This is another slice of perfection that veers from whimsical fun in 'Wall Of Death' to desperate emotions in 'Shoot Out the Lights', which features the definitive Thompson guitar solo. Critics have often been accused of hyping artists, but try as they may, they can't do it with this one. Time will tell but this album should be in many more homes.
