Shostakovich's musically brilliant and ingeniously panoramic opera about love, lust, power ... more
and oppression is famously well played by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Mariss Jansons in this authoritative production. Stage Director Martin Kusej builds on formidable musical strengths to forge a relentless drama that explores with emotional conviction the shadowy, layered boundaries between victims and perpetrators. First-rate protagonist Eva-Maria Westbroek is phenomenal in her gripping interpretation of Katerina, compelling the entire cast, including the choir, to almost unbearable realism in their portray of timeless human weakness.
Advantages: Brilliant characterisation Disadvantages: Bit difficult to read at points
Macbeth by William Shakespeare is one of my fav plays by Shakespeare. The characters and language are brilliant and although at times the play s difficult to read it is actually one of Sahkespeare's easiest plays. And much easier compared to King Lear or Julius Cesar etc.
The story is based around the Scottish monarchy when King Duncan was in power. Macbeth then kills Duncan to gain the throne. It is a story based on power and is gripping throughout. However, i think that the main character was really ladymacbeth.
LadyMacbeth is often described as the most evil woman in literature. Throughout the play, I found it easyt o dismiss this fiend-like queen. My interpretation and understanding of her character is that there is more to LadyMacbeth than pure wickedness.
In her first scene, Shakespeare uses phrases to conjure up ...
** Macbeth **
MacBeth is a brave strong warrior, also a highly respected lord and defends his king from anything. However he does have one weakness, ambition. He allows first the witches prophecy and then and then his wife ambition for him. It is very clear that in the play he is not easily won over to evil ? his conscience is strong, and throws up many objections to him doing the deed. However, he is also too easily influenced in the direction that he secretly desires to go. Once he has decided, he does not deviate, and each step subsequently reaffirms his initial choice.
** LadyMacBeth **
After her husband, Macbeth of Scotland, informs her in a letter about his opportunity to become king, she tells herself that his temperament is "too full o' the milk of human kindness" (Act 1, Scene 5) for the necessary evil to kill ...

Advantages: Teaches a lot of lessons. Disadvantages: The language is hard to understand at times.
of Banquo appears to him, but no one else:
'Thou canst not say I did it; never shake thy gory locks at me!'
This emphasizes Macbeth's feeble character even more and shows us that he isn't all he says he is. Throughout the play, we see hints of Macbeth being greatly influenced by women, particularly his wife, LadyMacbeth. Her powerful character fuels his growing ambition to become king and this is exposed in Act I Scene V when she tells him:
'Your hand, your tongue; look like th'innocent flower, But be the serpent under't.'
We now see her nasty and manipulative side, convincing Macbeth that he has the power to commit such a crime. It is hinted to that the influence she has over Macbeth is partly due to her love for him and also to her thirst for power:
'Of direst cruelty: make thick my blood.'
Their isolation from the rest ...
