NOISE POLLUTION !!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right this is going to be fun and very therapeutic.
I have always had 20/20 hearing; even in my mid 40?s I have very clear and sensitive hearing.
If a tap is dripping in the kitchen sink you can bet I will hear it. Or if the air pump on the fish tank has moved and is buzzing a little too loud I will have to get up and sort it.
I even had an alarm clock a while back, you know the one that wakes you up with music from the radio rather than that horrible wha wha wha wha but it had to go? I swear I could hear it buzzing?
We have annual medicals in work and for the nearly 30 years that I have worked for the company I have always had perfect hearing. My eye sight might be failing, my weight rising and as for blowing into that stupid tube to show your lung function, well don?t get me started ...
Advantages: An insight into the great mind that was - Frank Zappa Disadvantages: May be a little to wild for some people.
''
Some nice solo work on the guitar from Zappa in the track. Funny narrative to it also.
Track Seven - Apostrophe'
'
You'd expect the title track of the album to be good. This was. Great tempo for a great sound, also allowing Zappa's real creativity to shine through. 5mins 50secs of great flat-out 70's rock!
Track Eight - Uncle Remus
Not Zippity-doo-dah, but really rather good and my favorite track on the album! A+ for this one, and I don't know why I like it so much. Amazing backing vocals give it a kinda soul-feel. But seriously listen to it; it ends with another great solo from Zappa.
Track Nine - Stink-Foot
You must have heard of this track already. This is Zappa ...
Advantages: a brilliant 1974 concert with a top notch Zappa band Disadvantages: not quite the whole gig and the instrumentals may be a little off putting to newcomers
be delighted to learn that the truly amazing guitar solo was actually lifted from this concert and that the version of "Inca Roads" presented here is almost the equal of the studio track. George's tongue twisting vocals, the absurd percussion breaks, the glorious jazz funk keyboard solo and Zappa's stately guitar solo make up what is surely one of Zappa's most impressive songs.
The gig keeps going with a monstrous "RDNZL" and a bunch of songs familiar from the 1974 Roxy and Elsewhere album before crashing into a spectacular "Pygmy Twylyte" which has another superb guitar solo at the end. Disc one ends with a hurried rush through "Cheepnis", Zappa's hilarious ode to 50's monster movies, but it's a pity that Nappy was losing his voice by this point and it sounds rather hoarse.
The second disc is primarily instrumental - partly due to ...
Album Notes
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar); Warren Cucurullo (guitar, electric sitar); Steve Vai, Denny Walley, Ike Willis, Ray White (guitar); Jean-Luc Ponty (baritone violin); Tommy Mars, Peter Wolf, Eddie Jobson, Bob Harris, Andre Lewis (keyboards); Arthur Barrow, Patrick O'Hearn, Roy Estrada (bass); Vinnie Coliauta, Terry Bozzio (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). Engineers include: Bob Stone, Mick Glossop, George Douglas. Recorded between February 17, 1979 and December 11, 1980. Originally released as a 3 LP set. SHUT UP 'N PLAY YER GUITAR puts the musical spotlight on Frank Zappa's solo guitar improvisations. Although many think of Frank Zappa first and foremost as a supreme composer and satirist, many seem to overlook the fact that he was one of the greatest rock guitarists that ever lived. After all, such latter-day guitar heroes as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (the latter was a member of Zappa's backing band in the early '80s) revered him, often listing select Zappa albums as "the best guitar albums of all time." But since he refused to play commercially acceptable music, many young guitarists are unaware of Zappa's guitar prowess. To correct this, Zappa issued the double-disc set SHUT UP N' PLAY YER GUITAR in 1986. Instead of just compiling already-released tracks that prominently featured his guitar chops, Zappa searched through tapes of concerts from his 1979 and 1980 tours, and edited together his very best solos. Although this may be a monotonous listen for a non-guitar player or a newcomer to Zappa's work, guitar enthusiasts and hardcore fans will consider it a godsend. It's hard to pick just a few highlights, since each disc is meant to be listened to in it's entirety, but you can't go wrong with "Hog Heaven," "Five-Five-Five," and "The Deathless Horsie," to name but a few.
