Ok, so I know that Prince (oops sorry! The artist formerly known as Prince) is a bit old school but I honestly feel that his music is still relevant nowadays. Sure he is a bit of a loony, with all the symbol stuff/media p*ss take stunts and all but the music speaks for itself and personally I dont mind my rock stars a bit on the kooky side.
Sign Of The Times (the album and the soundtrack) is one of my favourite Prince albums. It's jammed packed with songs that have had so much radio time over the years that I defy anyone to not know at least a few of the words to most of the songs! It's got the title track 'Sign of the times', 'Slow Love', 'If I was your girlfriend' and 'I could never take the place of your man'.
This album is just as good as Purple Rain (which also ran parrallel to a feature film) and was released in 1987. The album itself shows off the artists eclectic nature but in a way that at least has some consitence throughout this album. The songs are funk filled, poppy and catchy with often real strong punchy beats. They are totally brilliant for a singalong, to dance to or just as up beat but background music. Most of the songs have an 80s epic electric romantic feel which is delightful but the really poignant thing about the songs is Prince's voice which lends itself to brilliant octave ranges as well as R&B tunefullness vocals driving the storytelling 'in the moment' lyrics to the audience perfectly. There is no doubt that the quality of Prince's voice is somewhat unusual for a guy singer as it is very feminine sounding and works to really project and conjure emotions and sentiments, demonstrated perfectly in the lyrically powerful 'The Cross'.
If you have never heard of Prince and want an idea which albums to go for first then I would recommend either this one or Purple Rain as a first off. I dont think this is the kind of album most guys would be into (I actually dont know any blokes who like Prince) but you never know.
Summary: Defiitely one of his best albums ever!
