My brother has been telling me about this CD for ages, I saw it the other day and bought it and am very impressed.
A mixture of chilled and energetic tunes, Silent Alarm is a cross between drum n' base and rock. The vocals are very melodic and the lyrics are thoughful, though perhaps quite sing-a-longy. There are different mixtures of styles in the music, fast drumming, a mixture of rock and ska in the background and good deep base lines assist the tuneful singing.
Helicopter is a song that may yet become an anthem, Like Eating Glass and Positive Tension had me dancing around my front room like an idiot. Blue Light and Plans provide chilled, foot-tapping and head nodding songs. If you feel like you wanna jump around and go mad, this is the album for you. If you feel like you want to relax and chill out, this is the album for you. It provides both sides of the spectrum.
However, the album tails off towards the end and there are a few weaker songs that had me reaching for the "Next" button. But I think it is destined to become one of the classic debut albums of the early 21st century.
Bloc Party have a unique style and take the listener through many genres of music adapting styles as they go. In this modern age of "new" alternative rock n' roll bands, they are a cut above the rest and totally different to anything else I have heard. If you like a mixture of energetic and ambient rock, and like a different sound, this is definately the CD for you.

Advantages: It's an excellent album, totally different to everything else. Contains one of the best song's I've heard in years Disadvantages: A few tracks take their time to grow. Instantly compared to bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers, without being judged on its own merit
Advantages: Lyrically and vocally compelling.Sounds bit like Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Cure and such like Disadvantages: The vocals can sometimes bit a bit shouty and musically they aren't that impressive or different.
