Although this album came out in February 2006, over a year ago, I still find myself listening to it to this day.
Whether it's Kele's screeching vocals, the infectious drum beats and riffs or the sheer indie electro-ness of some of the tracks here, there's definitely something here that stands out from the rest. A good majority of these tracks, including 'Helicopter' and 'She's Hearing Voices', will just have you clicking repeat again and again, and the other's aren't half bad either.
Having said that, this isn't for everyone. Bloc Party aren't an instantly likeable pop band. Thier songs can be quite 'out there' and may take some listening to really attach to. But it's very rewarding when you do.
So, for all you fans of downloading out there, lets go through each tracks and decide whether it's worth downloading off of Limewire. I er mean, purchase legally from a reputable music outlet.
'Like Eating Glass' is wonderfully introductive, and gives a little taster of what you can expect in the next 46.2 minutes of listening. It begins with a brilliant build up of instrumentals, culminating in the bursting through of Kele's wonderfully unique vocals. Lyrically, this song stands out as Kele wails "I can't eat, I can't sleep!", accompanied by his band members in beautiful harmony by lots of lovely oooooohs.
'Helicopter' needs little introduction. The riff itself is legendary and the remaining four minutes of the song fail to let down an outstanding opening. Great stuff.
'Positive Tension' shows off the fantastic, varied drum patterns the band are capable of working with, with swishing synthesiser accompanied, as always, by Kele. The best bit of this track though, is the sublime, air guitar inducing burst of pure unadulterated guitar solo, that makes Guns 'n' Roses look like the Chelsea Flower Show.
The highlight of the album emerges in 'Banquet'. The interplay between the two guitar sections is flawless, and will guarantee bopping on the bus and moshing in the office. The lyrics are contagious and inspired.
'Blue Light' is the eye of the storm- a period of melancholic guitar and soft speech between the fury of 'Banquet' and the loudness of 'She's Hearing Voices'. The drums here are immence and the chanting lyrics are more catchy than Bird Flu. This song IS Avian Flu.
'This Modern Love' is as brilliant in its guitar, as 'Pioneers' is uplifting and sunny.
'So Here We Are' is like a loely interlude, blending beautifully into 'Luno'; the most show-offy of all the tracks here when it comes to tecnical, intrumental ability.
'Plans' is a bit repetitive, and perhaps a black mark against an otherwise brilliant album, but this slip is more than compensated for by Radiohead-esque 'Compiments'- a classy end to a classy album.
Would I recommend this over their new album? No, not If you're a first time listener. 'A Weekend In The City' is much more accessible and, lets face it, popular. Give that a try first.
If you liked this album, try those of 'Joy Division', 'The Bravery' or 'Muse' too, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, and 'The Bends' by Radiohead.
Enjoy music!

Advantages: It's an excellent album, totally different to everything else. Contains one of the best song's I've heard in years Disadvantages: A few tracks take their time to grow. Instantly compared to bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers, without being judged on its own merit
Advantages: Lyrically and vocally compelling.Sounds bit like Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Cure and such like Disadvantages: The vocals can sometimes bit a bit shouty and musically they aren't that impressive or different.
