With crispy guitar solos and sparkling clear vocals, this should have been rather popular but it just didn't do it for me. This is when I came to the conclusion that I'm a bit of a heathen and it just seems to straight and clean for my liking.
Poppy vocals singing through an album that is based on a Finnish poem compiled of Finnish and Karelian folklore in the 19th century called "Kalevala", educated it may be but it just appears to be pretentious arty twaddle to my ears and belongs in the theatre rather than on the shelves of a heavy metal section in a music shop!
Fortunately for me there were some slightly brutal vocals but they didn't really work as my mood had been dampened by the clean and cheerful poppy sound to Joutsen's regular vocals. Unless you want to dabble with the realms of artistic mediocrity - I'd steer clear of this one.

Album Notes
Amorphis: Tom Joutsen (vocals); Tom Roivusaari, Esa Holopainen (guitar); Santeri Kallio (keyboards); Niclas Etelavuori (bass instrument); Ian Rechberger (drums). Additional personnel: Tanya Kemppainen, El Goodman, Kai Kaarnainen, Jofa 'Singin Manager', Marco Hietala (vocals). By the time Finnish band Amorphis--former kings of speed metal-- recorded this eighth album in 2007, their sound had evolved into melodic, bass-heavy metal that draws inspiration from grunge, pop, and symphonic rock. The songwriting on SILENT WATERS is top-notch and shows a marked improvement from even their 2006 entry, ECLIPSE. The highlight here is the title track, an exhilarating power ballad with a haunting piano intro and convincing vocal by lead singer Tomi Joutsen (replacement for long-standing vocalist Pasi Koskinen, who left the band prior to this album).
Album Reviews
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "Newcomer Tomi Joutsen lends himself to the clean singing...adding a hollow croon that echoes Pete Steele and tackling the death growls like a bear trapped in a well. Lovely stuff."
