AFI (A Fire Inside) is an American rock band from California. They formed in 1991 and to date have released a total of seven studio albums. Over the years the sound of this band has continued to develop and change, starting as a Hardcore Punk band, AFI developed to become more of a Horror Punk band, and more recently their music has had a more straight up rock sound with elements of punk rock thrown in for good measure. 'Sing the Sorrow' was the bands sixth studio album, and was the next logical step for the band to take having released their 'The Art of Drowning' album in 2000. Although the sound of AFI is ever changing, they have taken things extremely slowly and never does the sound change drastically from one release to the next. In 'Sing the Sorrow' AFI produce an epic sound that is always exciting to listen to and never do they disappoint. I was a great fan of the early work of AFI, but am all for change and love the line that the band have taken with their music in continuing to grow with every release and never sounding quite the same.
Beginning with the introduction of 'Miseria Cantare--The Beginning', the band soon break into 'The Leaving Song, Pt. II', an excellent track that was in fact released commercially as a single. The track kicks the album off well I feel and leaves you wanting for more, desperate to hear what the band will have to offer with the rest of the album. It has a great chorus and as the band blast their way through this track there is never a dull moment. It is a great one to sing along to at the top of your voice, and the sound you produce will no doubt fill the room for all to enjoy (unless you happen to be tone deaf of course). With this track the band start as they mean to go on, and as they crush their way through the rest of the album the music is never short of enthralling.
Although the band are forever changing, there are times on this album when even their early Hardcore Punk sound can be heard coming through. 'Dancing Through Sunday' is one such example of this, and although this element of the sound is watered down with some cleanly sung, softly spoken vocals; there is a definite Hardcore Punk bite about the track, and it does in fact begin in quite a Hardcore fashion. The fact the band do not forget their roots here is great to hear, and this aggressive element of their music certainly sits well with me.
'Girl's Not Grey' was perhaps the bands most well known track until the release of 'Miss Murder' in 2006. There is good reason for this, 'Girl's Not Grey' is a brilliant track and is one that is in possession of an exceptional chorus and some truly fantastic guitar work. Every time I listen to this album I can't help but smile every time this track begins to play. There is just something about this track, something that I love, cherish, and will forever hold in high regard. Tracks rarely have as great effect on me as this, but 'Girl's Not Grey' is definitely amongst the tracks that I would regard as my favourites of all time. There are so many AFI tracks that I love, and yet this is always the first that springs to mind when I think of the band. It's quite strange that this is my favourite considering that I prefer the earlier albums of the band to the more recent material, but the fact of the matter is that 'Girl's Not Grey' is an absolutely excellent track.
What I love about this album is that it packs such a vast array of genres into its run time. Every track comes as a surprise, and as the band progress their way through the album you never know quite where they are going to go next. The fact that the album is so unpredictable makes it terrific fun to listen to, never do the band disappoint and always they excite. One moment Davey Havok will be singing his little socks off at his most melodic, and next he will erupt into a fiery hardcore vocal assault. Whatever sound the band are producing in this album, they always sound excellent and never do they sound uncomfortable in what they are doing. AFI are an extremely accomplished band and sound natural in every sound that they produce, whether it be soft and gentle or heavy and aggressive; AFI are always brilliant and pull the sound off with a great deal of style and a high level of excitement.
'Sing the Sorrow' is a fantastic AFI album and is one that I hold in extremely high regard. Some may not appreciate the way in which this band operates in that their sound is always evolving and therefore they never sound the same from one release to the next, however I greatly appreciate the adaptations that the band undertake with each and every release. I thoroughly enjoy the music of AFI and would definitely recommend the 'Sing the Sorrow' album to all. There is such a great variety of music displayed on this album, many genres are covered and therefore there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Whilst you may not enjoy every track that the album has to offer, you will definitely find some that impress, tracks that you can gain great enjoyment from listening to. The fire inside this band is still burning bright, AFI still have plenty of ideas as a band and with a sound that is continually showing signs of growth; the music that this band produce should never become tiresome. 'Sing the Sorrow' is an astronomically excellent album and AFI a tremendously talented band.

So, A.F.I. - Sing the Sorrow....

Background
*************
A.F.I. stands for A Fire Inside, a group formed in 1991 in California. They have released 7 albums and musically each is different to the others....at least that is what fans of rock/punk/metalcore/EMO/*insert other guitar orientated adjective here* will tell you. To an outsider, A.F.I. are basically a rock band towards the punky end of things, therefore, expect speed ... ...who goes from screech to sing with great ease.
Track 1: Miseria Cantare: The beginning - you start the CD and here nothing and then a drum beats, synths build and you hear a chanting of, "love your hate, your faith lost, you are now one of us" as the drum beat picks up. Silence, drum beat and in comes Havok, chanting rather than singing the initial lines, when he hits the word "incinerate" the band kicks in, one of those spine tingling moments. ...

Advantages: A more mature turn from a band that has proven an incredible ability to evolve. Disadvantages: Some may see this as too far a movement away from the bands punk roots.
...tolls.
In many ways, Sing the Sorrow is an album of two halves. The first half could be considered more radio friendly, with singles "The Leaving Song Part Two" and "Girls Not Grey" placed alongside equally dark and introverted songs "Bleed Black" and "Silver and Cold".
If those songs prove that, yes, Davey can sing properly and doesn't need to unleash his gutteral punk roar, then "Death of Seasons" and "Dancing Through Sunday" prove that AFI haven't ... ...not quite) rivals "God Called In Sick Today".
Sing the Sorrow is an impressive album that all but the most hard nosed punk should be able to enjoy. It's not as good as "Black Sails in the Sunset", but its a damn sight better than "The Art of Drowning". ...

Advantages: A breakthorugh...expansive in taste...dark and serious Disadvantages: I am still not a fan of slow songs by this band!!
Their 6th full rounded album, Sing the Sorrow, released last year was a most anticipated album by fans, critics and the music industry alike. A highly talked about band, raising from the underground punk scene in the early 1990's on the east bay hardcore region in California. They had hit the big time with albums such as Black sails in the sunset and Art of drowning, but this was the big one, the time and financial backing was there, with the guidance ... ...have racked up great bands as nirvana, blink182, smashing pumpkins, bad religion and many more they were surely destined to make the big breakthrough with this album. After weeks and weeks of waiting for a release date it finally came, and my order on Amazon was already booked, 12 main tracks, and 2 special songs for the UK edition only, it was worth the wait and the money.
The album its self, was beautifully designed with art work from Alan Forbes, ...

Advantages: Catchy, best AFI album, Packed with SONGS Disadvantages: Some of the slower songs
AFI, aka A Fire Inside, this is their 6th album, and was the most talked about, by the faned. This band are totally unique, their sound is different all of the time and they keep you guessing. Their previous albums Art of Drowning, and Black Sails in the Sunset, have a totally different sound but this album is more friendly to anyones ears really, and shows their growth in music. I believe the UK version is Special Edition, and I prefer this artwork ... ...The drumming in this album is just so catchy, and Davey's lyrics are dark and evoking to emotions. Lead singer Davey Havok, has a very outgoing personality, with his true colours that show. Covered in tattoo's with meaning, being straight edge. I know many people look up to him, especially one of my mates, who describes him as GOD.
14, action packed and well written tracks, without a doubt!

Album Notes
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. A.F.I.: Davey Havok (vocals); Jade Puget (guitar); Hunter (bass); Adam Carson (drums). Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California. With its major label debut SING THE SORROW, AFI (aka A Fire Inside), has made the leap from being strictly hardcore punk denizens to a more complex outfit dabbling in goth guitar textures and a soaring sound. With Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and Green Day/Rancid knob-twirler Jerry Finn manning the board, this transition ends up being a smooth one. Swirling synths, disembodied harmonies and the Tool-like bashing of drummer Adam Carson help the foreboding "Miseria Cantare" set a mood closer to Dead Can Dance than the Dead Kennedys. Although "Death of Season" predominantly rides a hardcore vibe, the most obvious indicators that this ain't your older brother's punk rock are "The Leaving Song Pt. II," with its sing-along-chorus and pounding rhythm, the dark Cult-like rocker "Bleed Black," and "This Celluloid Dream," a charged anthem of vulnerability. Further indications that AFI successfully straddles the worlds of mainstream acceptance and street credibility are radio-friendly songs like "The Leaving Song" and "The Great Disappointment" featuring Jade Puget's melodic riffing and Davey Havok's heartfelt crooning. This Bay Area quartet seals the innovative SING THE SORROW with "Girl's Not Grey," a perfect pop-punk song that rides along on catchy, chanting harmonies and churning guitar.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (3/20/03, p.64) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...SING THE SORROW is a dark planet that refracts various strains of rock, from punk to hardcore to metal to mope rock, and beckons everyone to twist and shout along..." Spin (4/03, p.101-2) - "...Retaining nu metal's most-friendly sonic whomp, the band replace the genre's pervasive despair with open-hearted punk uplift....Even this record's darkest moments sound hopeful..."
