So now that I’ve made the embarrassing revelation, I might as well tell you about one of my favourite albums, Robbie’s “Sing When You’re Winning”. I love it because it happens to be the album he was promoting when I saw him live, and boy was that an experience! ... Read review

files.Personnel includes: Robbie Williams (vocals); Alana Duncan (spoken vocals); Neil Taylor (electric guitar); Guy Chambers (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer): Phil Palmer (12-string guitar); Steve Sidwell (piccolo trumpet); Dave Catlin-Birch (bass, background vocals); Winston Blissett, Brad Lang, Phil Spalding (bass); Chris Sharrock (drums); Andy Duncan (percussion); Andy Caine, Steve McEwan, Gary Nuttall, Claire Worrall (background vocals), Kylie Minogue. The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music. The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety (Kids, a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of Let Love Be Your Energy, to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon (Better Man). Best of all, however, is Rock D.J., a Cockney-rap track which sounds like modern day Ian Dury until it closes with a lift of the vocal breakdown from Sly Stone's Dance To the Music. All in all, SING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING is an ambitious and highly entertaining piece of work.[Reviews]Rolling Stone (10/26/00, pp.112-4) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - ...An audio spectacle showcasing [both Williams' and collaborator Guy Chambers'] melodic wit and stylistic valor....the essence of power pop...Entertainment Weekly (10/20/00, p.77) - ...A winner... - Rating: A-Q (1/01, p.94) - Included in Q's 50 Best Albums of 2000.Q (9/00, pp.94-5) - 4 stars out of 5 - ...The instant he opens his mouth, out pops the charisma....you can't help liking him. it seems Robbie Williams has finally got Take That out of his system. Which means that for most of Sing When You're Winning, he is either ecstatically happy, in cheeky party mood--as with disco single "Rock DJ"--or reminding all just what a huge star he is, as with the self-appreciating/depreciating mock arrogance of his Kylie duet "Kids": he raps with a nod and a wink "I'm an honourary Sean Connery/single handedly raising the economy/ain't no chance of the record company dropping me". He's right of course, but his joy is only surface deep. With his Take That hate gone, his mocking humour has nothing to focus on--nothing except his own failings: lack of love and real self-belief. And so it is that Robbie indulges in a string of ill-advised, down-mouthed acoustic plodders, "Better Man" ("Angels" Mark II--but not quite), "If It's Hurting You", "Love Calling Earth" and "Road To Mandalay", where he shows just how frighteningly sincere he can be. Touching as they are, it's when the snarling attitude and big anthems like "Let Love Be Your Energy", "Supreme", "Knutsford City Limits" and "Forever Texas" are in full flow that the star shines and Singing When You're Winning sounds like the best thing he's done. --Dan Gennoe

Advantages: It's corkin Disadvantages: Takes a few listens before it grabs ya by the googlies
...I dare you not to sing along.
The Beatles/Oasis theme continues with the Sgt Pepper-like middle eight, all trilling brass and shouted vocals a la Lennon before a final reprise of that glorious chorus filled out with super brass, flute, backing vox and gorgeous resonant bass runs. What an opener!
2. Better Man
“Send someone to love me, I need to rest in arms, keep me safe from harm, in pouring rain”
Better man is a sweet symphony of ... ...And you can’t help but sing and dance along, can you? (And the female backing vox are super!)
4. Supreme
“What are you really looking for, another partner in your life to abuse and to adore, is it lovey dovey stuff, do you need a bit of rough, get on your knees”
Ohhh, the angst! Love in the 21st century, or lack of it! Creamy, hooky string theme loop, crisp drums, great orchestration, piano, and the master of the singable chorus ...

Advantages: His cheeky humour shines through Disadvantages: I know some people find him irritating
I am admittedly, a huge fan of Robbie Williams, so while I will try to remain unbiased when reviewing this CD, I will warn you now that I will probably fail miserably, and this will end up being the most one sided piece of writing you have ever come across, so apologies in advance, because the man can not put a foot wrong in my humble opinion, as I am sure my review of his latest release will show!!!!! LET LOVE BE YOUR ENERGY is the perfect opening ... ...the music, but there are moments when the song is like an anthem, and it fills you with anticipation of what is to follow. A brilliant uplifting opener. BETTER MAN is such a beautiful ballad, that in my eyes it ranks alongside ANGELS for pure brilliance, and has been ignored by many critics. The song is quite infamous now as it is the one that Darren Day sang on 'I'm A Celebrity...', the lyrics show how far Robbie has come in the last few years. ...

Advantages: Twelve sublime songs Disadvantages: The booklet isn't the best quality
Well, I bought this one on the day that it came out and I can't say that I was disappointed.
Robbie's third solo album is in my opinion his best effort yet. While there have been classics on both his previous albums, neither have come close to the consistent quality visible in "Sing When You're Winning".
The standard issue of the CD comes with twelve songs (the special edition has a couple more). These are:
1: Let love be your energy
A great ... ...speech that I still haven't managed to decipher all of. Anyone want to help?
2: Better Man
A nice slower number after the energy of the first song. Very strong vocals as per normal.
3: Rock DJ
The first single of the song. I wasn't sure about this one the first time. But it definately grows on you.
4: Supreme
Contains a fair bit of sampling from Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive". Simply Supreme. I'm not sure if anything was changed on the radio ...

Advantages: It is Robbie Williams Disadvantages: You would expect better from Robbie but it is still great
So here we have it, Robbie Williams' third album. Both 1997's 'Life Thru A Lens' and 1998's 'I've Been Expecting You' reached Number One. 'Sing When You're Winning' has too. But is it any good?
Well, sort of. Robbie thanks co-writer Guy Chambers on the sleeve notes, saying that Chambers is "as much Robbie As I am." And after listening to this album a few times you have to agree and ask yourself where Robbie would be without Guy Chambers.
That said, ... ...is nothing here to match the glory of 'Old Before I Die', 'Angels', 'Let Me Entertain You' or 'Millennium'. And recent single 'Rock DJ' -the one with the cannibalistic video- though largely the catchiest thing on 'Winning', isn't up to Robbie's usual high pop standards.
And while there are a few glorious moments on the new album, after four or five listens it does still tend to wash inoffensively over you. In fact, if Mr Williams wasn't such a cheeky, ...

Advantages: Great singles Disadvantages: The lyrical quality isn't up to scratch
So here it is then. Robbie Williams' third number 1 album. But is it any good?
Well in a word, yes. Here's a track-by-track of the new album.
1) Let Love Be Your Energy- A rocky anthem with lots of power chords. Postive lyrics which match a catchy chorus. A great choice of single.
2) Better Man- A soft ballad with subtle strings and nice nice lyrics.
3) Rock DJ- We all know this chart-topper. The beginning rapped bit gives way to a pumping disco ... ...make sense though.
4) Supreme- This samples heavily from Gloria Gaynor's Seventies disco hit I Will Survive. A catchy song which after a while becomes rather tiresome.
5) Kids- Robbie's duet with Kylie Minogue. And one of the album's highlights. A low-slung funky groove surrounded by catchy lyrics.
6)If It's Hurting You- A great little rock ballad. Very subtle and very soulful.
7)Singing For The Lonely- Good enough to begin with but almost instantly ...
