of musical films. If you are feeling down and want something to make you smile then this is the right kind of film to watch. It is not difficult to follow and has a really nice feel good element to it. Singin In The Rain is a well written Hollywood musical that was written by Pauline Kael. Pauline Kael seems to know how to blend all the important ingredients to make a spectaculor film that people will remember for years afterwards. Don Lockwood is played by Gene Kelly who has a knock in confidence when Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) makes it apparent what she thinks of actor's that are in films. Her feelings are that actor's in films are people who don't have much going for them and this upsets Don Lockwood. Don soon gets over the insult, but develops a strong crush on Kathy despite what she has said. Things do not run smoothly however since ...

All Singin' and All Dancin' (its a splash!)

Advantages: A fun family film, funny, great music and dancing.
Disadvantages: None

~~ Singin' in the Rain ~~ Anyone that reads my reviews know by now that I love the musicals, especially the old ones. Gene Kelly has always been in my top five of dancers and he stars in this film, he is also one of the directors and one of the two choreographers, so a very busy man. That classic scene where Gene Kelly dances along the street in the rain with his umbrella, singing the title song 'Singin' in the Rain' has been copied and replayed by many over the years, is still one of my favourite scenes. The main stars of the show are: - Gene Kelly playing Don Lockwood Debbie Reynolds playing Kathy Seldon Donald O'Connor playing Cosmo Brown Jean Hagen playing Lina Lamont. The ultimate Gene Kelly musical

Advantages: Spectacular of dance and song with comedy thrown in!
Disadvantages: Maybe contrived in places, but hey! It's a musical!

How I wish musicals today were put together in the same way as the great MGM's. If ever there was a film that appealed to such a diverse range of people, then this is it. Taken in the context of the other musicals of the era, it could perhaps be considered weak. The sets, the costumes, the HUGE spectacle of some of the other remembered 'greats' are not quite matched. But in other ways, Singin' in the Rain outstrips them all. Gene Kelly's dancing genius is, of course, the main attraction and it would be true to say that the film is only really a vehicle for it. But the peripheral characters, comedic elements and extremely well written script, make this an all round classic. The dance numbers are full of life, spectacularly choreographed, elegantly executed, and leave you with a huge smile on your face for a good few hours ...
