'I Have Often Wondered Why God Bothered With Depeche Mode' is a comment by John Gill, Time Out Magazine 1983.This is included in the album inside cover, among many other pro/anti Depeche Mode reviews of the time. Depeche Mode The Singles 81-85 is a 17 track album produced in 1998 by Mute Records Ltd. All song on the album are written by M L Gore except 01-03, 16 and 17 by V Clark. DM are David Gahan, Andrew Fletcher, Martin Gore, Alan Wilder/Vince Clarke. Vince Clarke was a member of DM in 1981 and appears on tracks 01-03,16 and 17 only.Alan Wilder was a member from 1982-1995. The album includes, 1) Dreaming of Me This Track was reviewed as 'Deep, meaningful, heavy and arty' by Betty Page/sounds 81 and also by Chris Bohn/NME 81 as 'Deadpan vocals, programmed rhythm rejoinders and a candyfloss melody'. 2) New Life 3) Just Can't Get Enough This track was reviewed as 'Hugely enjoyable, bouncy and boppy and very close to irritating' by Sunie/Record Mirror 81. 4) See You 5) The Meaning Of Love 6) Leave In Silence 7) Get the Balance Right. 8) Everything Counts 9) Love In Itself This Track was reviewed by Chris Bohn/NME 83 as 'A sober tune marks their continuing willingness to puncture any preconceptions you might have about them'. 10) People Are People 11) Master and Servant 12) Blasphemous Rumours Reviewed by Martin Townsend/No1 84 'Depeche Mode are becoming a very important band indeed. Thought Provoking Stuff'. 13) Somebody 14) Shake the Disease 15) It's Called A Heart 16) Photographic 17) Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix) Being in my early 20's I discovered this group in my teens as a 'happy accident'. I find this album dark, deep, thought provoking. It can be difficult to listen to initially and tracks like 'Blasphemous Rumours' can be a little offensive to members of the Christian faith. My favourite tracks are Somebody, Blasphemous Rumours and People are People. This album is a steal at around £5.00. As you may have gathered by now DM are very much a controversial group who's music have split oppinion for generations. I myself feel that you have to broaden your musical horizons as much as possible and even Chris Martin ( from ColdPlay) cites DM as a musical influence.
