What can I say? Anyone who has previously heard the chemical brothers will know how good they are. Their style of music is Alternative Dance - in the same sort of league as groups like Aphex Twin and The Prodigy so to speak, although where the latter two bands are "punky/dirty" in style the Chemical Brothers are more "Indie/chilled" in style (leading the way for other artists such as Fatboy Slim) with the odd dirty sounding track here and there - but were and still are pioneers of the "big-beats" sound. Having collaborated with some of the biggest names in Brit Pop (Noel Gallagher from Oasis and Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream, Wayne Coyne - The Flaming Lips, Richard Ashcroft - The Verve and Tim Burgess amongst others) and having had countless hit singles and albums, the Chemical Brothers rightly deserve a best of album.
And this album does not dissapoint - it is pure class - it's the best of the best and represents 10 years of Chemical Brothers singles. A 2-CD album that really gives you superb value for money. Want the best of the Chems back-catalogue (so far!) - well it's all here in one flippin excellent Album! All the Chemical Bro's finest work in one fantastic compilation. Now I know that there will probably be subsequent Chemical Brothers work in the future, but as a "story so far" kinda best of album its great.
Every track is a winner, there are very few tracks that I skip and even then the only reason I generally skip them is to get to my personal favourites.
So
what are the tracks like? Well.....
"Block Rocking Beats" (which netted a Grammy for "Best Rock Instrumental"!) is still as fresh today as it was a decade ago (and for me was the track that put them on the map so to speak). It's phat, punchy drum beats mixed with a helping of simple yet highly effective bass lines form a good basis for the track. What makes it so different though is the cunning use of a "siren" sound - although not quite in the usual manner as you'd expect from the Chemical Bro's! Nice simple (yet perfect for the track) vocal samples from "Schoolly D" finish off the song to provide a real pounding track that'll make you wanna jump like a loon all over the place! "Back with another one of those BLOCK ROCKING BEATS!"
Moving on "Setting Sun" was a number of collaboration between the Chems and a certain Mr Gallagher. It's a neat track, with the drums working well to compliment some good vocals. Noel does well to provide a real Indie feel to this track, whilst still allowing the track to retain a definitive Chemical feel to it. The lyrics are typically Oasis/beatle/Brit-pop sounding (well what do you expect from a Gallagher?!) but he delivers them well so the track gels nicely.
"Loops of Fury" I think quite hard to describe the sound. It's got the obvious hard-hitting beats that you come to love with the Chems, but what makes it such a good track are the strange synthersiser sounds which make up the "lead" to the track. The sound kinda swirls around you creating their own beat to compliment the drums. Nicely worked track, though not really one you'd listen to over and over again. Probably due to the fact that it's entirely instrumental (i.e no vocals). This track was one of the Chems earliest releases and I think has a certain "hip-hop" kinda feel to it. More in terms of beat and rythmn of the track more than anything.
"Star Guitar" well what a track! On a slight tangent - the video for this track is awesome - really clever and is perfect for the track. It actually kinda helps you understand how the track feels. Clever use of sounds and beats kinda give the feel of being on a train! Sounds weird - well watch the video and you'll totally understand. The use of guitar on this track is not what you expect and is used as a sort of "lead" sound for the track. Some soothing use of a "ooohhh" sounding "pad" (a nice soft sound basically!) in the background really works well with the somework quirky but excellent drums (that really give the "train" effect!) to produce a really pulsating track.
"Hey boy hey Girl" was the first release from the Chems after a two year break from new material towards the late 90's. In my view it has a much more "house" feel to it than most of their previous work but still works well. More simple vocal samples (which I like and do prefere - they use this technique well) and subtle changes to the track allow this track to flow nicely. The usual clever mixing really makes the bass-drum "boom" when the drum beats properly kick in. Still much more relaxed than true house music - but a floor-filler in it's day and still good even now.
"Golden Path" was the track which featured Wayne Coyne and was an unusual mix of soft bass a light airy sounding lead and some slightly haunting vocals. The mix again is spot on though and the track just flows seemlessly with the drums beat doing it's part to ensure that the track still has a decent groove to it. This track was, I admitt, a grower for me - I wasn't a huge fan when I first heard it but the more I listened to it - the more I enjoyed it!
"It begain in Afrika". It begain in Afrika-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka! If you ever went clubbing in the early part of this millenium around 2001-2001, chances are you heard this track. The vocal loop is used to great effect in this song I feel, it's been turned into and used as a sample to great effect. The track is more "house" in style again (making use of the big clubbing scene at the time), but really does retain it's chemical sound well. Some strange sound effects give the song some real depth. A bit samey-samey in terms of sound and previous tracks - but then the Chemical Bros do specialise in this sort of music - so that's to be expected - plus, they do make it unique through clever mixing and sampling techniques.
"Get yourself high" is such a phat track! There's a real hip-hop feel to this track - much in the same way that their earlier tracks sounded. Big bass - great for driving in the car with a big sub - really makes this track and the vocals work soooo well! The vox add depth, groove and definately style to this track. Makes it feel more dirty - more naughty, almost making the song "trendy" for kinda being a bit controversial (a tactic loved by the Prodigy!). Great track non-the less - another one of my favourites.
The album includes many other tracks, which will probably be familiar even if you never knew they were Chemical Bro tracks! It also includes the track "Not another drugstore" on CD 2, which was a b-side to the "electrobank" single and is a interesting mix of rap and dance with a hip-hop edge and some excellent breakbeat drums that come together really well.
Just be warned - with all these excellent tracks and two CD's to choose from - friends and family may become sick and tired of hearing the album again - even if you're not.
Fantastic driving music for a long - motorway drive - so long as you don't mind driving a bit faster! lol!
These guys are the dogs nuts at what they do - and this album is a excellent way of posessing their best works to date.

Good review on a great album, but I got confused as you were reviewing a 2 DISC cd album, where it specifically saus 1 disc in the review topic tech. details, the version I have is also 1 disc.

Your review was borderline SH/H I rated it H and gave you the benefit of the doubt, , but I think that it needs a lot more information and detail to justify a higher rating. It helps if you write every product Review as if you’re writing for someone who has virtually no knowledge of what you’re reviewing, in clear non technical language. You might find it helpful if you read and rate some other peoples’ reviews (especially those that have been rated VH or E). It might give you an idea of the sort of things you need to include. It might also be helpful if you had a look at the Ciao guides to writing Reviews and Rating I found them really useful. If I can be of any help feel free to put a note in my gb. Rich
