I was 15 when i heard about Massive Attack for the first time, ever since then i've been hooked on the electo mellow sounds of their music. Largley accredited for starting the Trip/hop movement, influencing bands like Portishead, they grabed my attention purely because of the style of music. Not content with the commercialism of pop music which so dominates modern day music, the striking beats and angelic vocals of various colaborations, spiked a different genre of music. The singles makes up most of Massive Attacks earlier hits into one outstanding compilation. Every song is different to the next, but what is clear is their evolution of style through the years. The one thing about this band is their evolution, which is evident with their earlier work. A key transformation in their style of music might have been the departure of one of the founding members leaving to persue a solo career. Since the departure of Tricky, there music seems to have taken a more dark and deep sound, but none the less Massive Attacks singles are a true stepping stone in music, and with classics like Unfinished Sympathy there is no faulting this band and their music!
Advantages: Great Collecetion of easy listening techno/house classics Disadvantages: Some of the what were classics now sound dated
Massive attack have undoubtedly broken through many barriers whilst creating their own amazinf form of music attracting many admirers and many imitators, whom never quite manage to acheive the same success. This album demonstrates them at their peak with hit after hit showing their diverse msucial talents and roots. The classic massive attack anthem unfinsished symphony, everybody has heard and knows this song tops off a fantastic collection of current ... ...that they are not passed their best as they deliver another classic, with a slow groove and an amazing vocal perfromance. There are some amazing vocal performances on this album and they on their own demand listening. However the only place this album falls down are in some of the older tracks, no doubting they are worth a listen but what was once groundbreaking now can sound boring and dated and occasionally, very occasionally, the song length can ...

Album Notes
Although long since graduated to the status of full-blown pop stars (and ones known for constructing album-length works of sound art, with all of that format's accompanying tendency towards self-indulgence), Massive Attack have not forgotten their humble origins as a DJ collective. Accordingly, they retain a DJ's fondness for the 12" single, and over the course of their career have released enough material on vinyl to constitute a second body of work, unknown to many of their fans. This singles collection bridges the gap between that sub-culture and the group's larger audience. In doing so, it gives a better idea of the group's range than any other album. Not only does it contain tracks from all three Massive Attack albums plus several dub versions from the NO PROTECTION project, but, celebrating the alternate universes opened up through remixing, reveals previously unexplored avenues of the Massive Attack sound. The forward-moving bassline on the Underdog remix of "Protection," for instance, somehow highlights the melancholy of the vocal even more than the slower-paced album version, while the State Of Bengal remix of "Inertia Creeps" combats inertia with excursions into drum-and-bass.
Album Reviews
Muzik (2/99, p.80) - 5 stars (out of 5) - "...reckoned to be the most important band of the Nineties....Something this 11 CD box set...proves beyond all doubt..." Mojo (1/99, p.103) - "...the off-kilter approach to pop, the dance music you can't dance to, the rock music with the mordant undertow....Across the albums, the variety makes sense, each style shoring up its neighbour..." Mixmag (1/99, p.107) - 4 out of 5 - "...the most groundbreaking dance act of the decade....Brilliant, influential, occasionally infuriating..."
