and song titles like "Oh Shit?" and "Orgasm Addict" (both of which appear on this singles collection) . But in retrospect, it's easier to see what else they accomplished--some of the catchiest, most provocative pop singles ever. Pete Shelley expressed heartbreak and frustration ("Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with?" goes the catchy chorus on their biggest hit) without falling victim to lovey-dovey clichés. This definitive 1979 collection nicely captures the Manchester quartet's tight melodies, economic writing and appropriately fast pace. --Steve Knopper

It’s twenty five years since punk rock hit the UK . Doesn’t it make you feel old? Well it doesn’t bother me a bit. Punk rock through up some classic pop bands such as the Ramones and Manchester’s very own Buzzcocks. They made their first EP , the near legendary “Spiral Scratch” featuring Howard Devoto , who left on good terms to form the excellent Magazine, leaving Pete Shelley with his Woolworth’s guitar and Mancunian whine to go on and produce some stunning pop singles.
This is a wonderful collection , the original vinyl version containing the “A” sides in chronological order on the “A” side and the “BE sides also in chronological order on the “B” side. On the CD you get all the “A” sides followed by all the “B” sides.
It kicks off with “Orgasm Addict” , an early punk idea of a “love” song., this idea being developed as the group grew in confidence on subsequent singles. I've just thought Anne Summers should use that in an advertising campaign, the song , the bands name and the AS product range go together perfectly! “What Do I Get” is superb pleading pop “I just wanna lover like any other, What Do I Get?”, a class song with Shelley’s tongue firmly in cheek.
The Buzzcocks were probably the UK’s answer to the Ramones. They didn’t have the vitriol of The Sex Pistols but made up for it with songs of unrequited love/lust and a great ear for a melody, usually clocking in around two minutes.
“I Don’t Mind” and the ninety second “Love You More” follow, before what is probably their most famous hit "Ever Fallen In Love With (Someone You Shouldn’t Have?)”, all classic punk pop hits.
“Promises”, “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays”, “Harmony In My Head” and “Whatever Happened To” complete the “A” sides, all excellent , indispensable pieces.
The “B” sides are just as interesting and complete this excellent package. My favourite is the long, brooding “Why Can’t I Touch It”, which I personally don’t think that the band have surpassed, but that’s only my opinion. There is also “Lipstick” , the “B” side of “Promises” that provided the dark ascending guitar riff that Howard Devoto used for the first Magazine single “Shot By Both Sides”.
An indispensable album and available at mid price from any half way decent record shop (i.e. 7.99 GBP on Amazon or 9.99 GBP at HMV/Virgin and an arm and a leg at V Shops).
Advantages: All your old favourites Disadvantages: No "Boredom"
This compilation comes complete with all the old favourites ("Ever fallen in love", "What do I get") and a few B-sides as well. Pete Shelly's songs bristle with raw punk energy and some hillarious lyrics (particularly "Orgasm Addict"). However if you're looking for the Buzzcock's early work with Howard Devoto you will be disappointed as almost all the songs featured are Shelly compositions. The single "Boredom" is also conspicuous by its abscence. ...

Review of Singles Going Steady - Buzzcocks
Advantages: Tracks, playing, approach Disadvantages: No no no
Oh those Buzzcocks! Those wonderful, amazing Buzzcocks with their infectiously, danceable pop hits and their fey little image.
After they burst on the scene with the Spiral Scratch EP on Manchester's independent New Hormones label they looked like they might lose their way when the serious songster Howard Devoto split to form Magazine, but despite the short term presence of the mammoth and ill suited bassist Garth, they got back on track when Stev ... ...other guitar part alongside Pete Shelley.
The Singles, Going STeady album is their greatest hits, plus their B sides and it's dripping with nostalgia from first track to the last - Oh Shit, Orgasm Addict, What Do I Get, Ever Fallen In Love, Something's Gone Wrong Again, Harmony In My Head, this is all heady, dizzy stuff, the stuff that teenage dreams are made of. They exploded after a few years when Shelley went his own way but for a few summers ...

...culled from the Manchester group's singles from the years 1977 to 1979.
The big hits are included of course. Their spiky ode to unrequited love, What do I Get? , the Pete Shelley penned masterpiece Ever Fallen in Love, and the smutty fun of the teenage paean to onanism - Orgasm Addict. Lesser known tunes to the casual listener such as Autonomy and Everybody's Happy Nowadays further showcase the Steve Diggle and Pete Shelley partnership as capable ... ...This "all the hits and more" package was banded together in 1979 and has now had its track list bumped up from 16 to 24. Much like The Jam's Compact Snap it has always been a preferred choice to other attempts at a Buzzcocks best that sidestep the feel of those early efforts. Some of the bonus tracks are great (Why She's The Girl From The Chainstore), others feel a little unnecessary (Airwaves Dream), but none bring down the overall quality. With ...

Advantages: Catch pop hooks and melodys Disadvantages: A few bad B-sides
The Buzzcocks are one of the first bands to mix the rage of punk with the catching choruses and melodys more commenly found in pop. They are with out a dout in my mind the first UK punk-pop band.
SinglesGoingSteady is an album of the Buzzcocks eight singles and a bunch B-sides. All filled with catchy hooks, melodies, punk rage, blasting guitars, loopy bass lines, hard-hitting drums, and high-pitch wailing vocals.
There is no way you can listen to this CD without one of there songs being stuck in your head. Just about all the songs on this album are about love and sex.
Some of the B-side tracks arn't as catch or as abrasive as the others but this don't really take anything from the album as a whole. ...

Album Notes
SINGLES GOING STEADY is a collection of the Buzzcocks' singles, including both A and B-sides. Buzzcocks: Pete Shelley (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Steve Diggle (vocals, guitar); Steve Garvey, Garth Smith (bass); John Maher (drums). Engineers: Alan Wistanley, Doug Bennett, Martin Rushent. Recorded at Eden Studios and Abbey Road Studios, London, England; T.W. Studios, Fulham, England; Olympic Studios, Barnes, England; Strawberry Studios, Stockport, England. The Buzzcocks emerged from Manchester's thriving punk enclave with a succession of startling pop singles. Tight melodies and highly memorable hooklines were enveloped in a breathless group sound full of purpose and drive which contrasted with singer Pete Shelly's dispassionate, almost throwaway, delivery. These eight singles, both a-sides and flips, covered a variety of subject matter, from masturbation ('Orgasm Addict') to 1981 nuspeak ('Everybody's Happy Nowadays'), without recourse to obfuscation. Such seminal recordings have ensured the Buzzcocks' place in a lineage just a bit below the Kinks and the Smiths as one of the best purveyors of the 45 rpm.
