Duran Duran's The Singles arrives with perfect timing. With the impulse to treat 1980s pop ... more
with nostalgic irony finally dying, and cutting edge American bands such as the Rapture and the Faint directly sourcing from Brit synth-pop, this lavish box set suddenly sounds like a key dance-rock primer. Unlike the other major players in the early 1980s British Invasion of America, Brummie boys Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Nick Rhodes were not afraid to rock. And it was the early singles where they rocked hardest, as this glossy black box of the first 13 singles, lovingly recreated for CD, irrevocably proves. The first eight--from the turbo-powered disco of "Planet Earth" to the synthetic Beatles-ims of "Is There Something I Should Know?"--work on the tension between the band's megapop ambitions and the rudimentary playing, creating an eerie, erotic desperation. The full compliment of B-sides--particularly a hysterical, uber-youth club stab at David Bowie's "Fame"--charm with their gung-ho ridiculousness. By the final "A View to a Kill" they were doing slick, Americanised Bond themes, but this set is so evocative of strange pop times that you'll end up with the promos for "Rio" and "The Wild Boys" on a permanent mind-loop. --Garry Mulholland

Advantages: Excellent price for CD and DVD package Disadvantages: DVD could have lasted a bit longer
As I have been reviewing some of DuranDurans albums on here I thought I should tell all of you about this one.
Astronaut is the bands newest release from last year that have now had a few hits from. You may remember that Reach up for the Sunrise made it to the top ten with a good beat and everybody waving their arms into the sky "Reach up for the sunrise". Some of the other hits include "taste the Summer" which recently a Supermarket chain aquired as it was a catchy tune to list their products to !
This album proves that DuranDuran are still as good today as they were back in the early 80's.
If you do not remember their music that well from the 80's it was roughly the same time that Spandau Ballet were around and in some ways the songs were slightly similar but DuranDuran had a faster pace to them, also Soft Cell started out ...
Advantages: Great uplifting album Disadvantages: bit behind times
In their decadent heyday, the pretty boys of DuranDuran were the crown princes of a fledgling MTV, but drugs, hubris and a few dodgy albums reduced this supergroup to has-beens. Now, twenty-one years since the original Fab Five's last studio album together, the band's classic lineup has returned. The bleach jobs and posturing remain, but the band has thankfully ditched the "Wild Boys" pomp rock that was its undoing. Instead, Astronaut revitalizes Duran's early synth-pop magic. The lush, moody tones of "Point of No Return" and uplifting charm of "Finest Hour" recall the seductive sounds of Rio and remind us that Duran always had a knack for radiant melodies. On "Sunrise," the catchy first single, only Simon LeBon and Co.'s sneering harmonies could turn unabashedly ridiculous lyrics such as "Put your hands into the big sky. . . ./Feel ...
Advantages: fantastic album Disadvantages: not enough tracks
What more can you say about this fantastic album. This is DuranDuran,s 2nd album. Its got everything on it and a whole range of songs. From pop to rock to slow. Shows the guys at their best and a lovely looking album cover too. I got bought this album when I was 10 years old and I have been a huge fan every since. Everything Duran does is great. They made some great videos for this album too which even today are well known. Rio and Save a prayer. I recently saw the guys play in Birmingham and the songs are timeless. Some of my personal favourites off the album are Lonley in your nightmear, Hold back the rain, the chauffeur. This is defently a must have album for anyone new discovering the joys of DuranDuran. IN 2001 they remastered the cd and it now has videos to watch on the disc. This album defently sounds a lot different in style to ...
