Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history . Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .
with the man.
When we were young we used to joke that "JohnnyCash played guitar with a boxing glove on one hand".? However that is really unfair and does the man no justice. His distinctive style, whilst not classical or great in the traditional way, is his own style. Couple this with his somewhat sad and mournful voice and you would know it was him singing easily. His genre is Country.
JohnnyCash At San Quentin
"San Quentin" was recorded on February 24th 1969, two days before Cash?s 37th birthday, at a concert held in San Quentin prison for the inmates. It quickly became a bestseller and topped various music charts. This was the fourth time Cash had appeared and played at San Quentin, the first being on January 1st 1958. After a rain soaked performance in the prison yard in 1958, Cash won the respect of the hardened criminals and was ...
Advantages: He is Johnny Cash Disadvantages: I am not Johnny Cash
? is a tender ballad which he dedicates for the most part to his wife (the woman that tamed him) June Carter. ?Rusty Cage? is a song about almost everything that Johnny liked singing songs about, and is dirty as hell, written by Tom Petty and this is probably the one song that sounds most like Tom Petty and The Heart Breakers.
?The One Rose (That is Left in My Heart)? is obviously one of Johnny?s favourite songs you can tell just by the way he writes about it in the sleeve notes, and that voice of God thing starts creeping in again. ?Country Boy? is about just that being a Country Boy, the joy of standing barefoot on a steam locomotive, the joy of being poor but having a richness of the soul cause who needs money when you got that?? (6) and is proof that Johnny did not always write about depressing things. The JohnnyCash Treatment ...
Advantages: Play - When you're weary and feeling small... Disadvantages: Don't Play - When you're with your skater buddies.
This fabulous album was robbed of being the last throw by the late, great JohnnyCash by the dodgy decision to release American V, a wholly lesser album.
So If you have no other Cash recording in your collection you must get this one. It's the voice of a reformed hell-raiser, drug addict and truly God-fearing man on the brink of final personal oblivion. It's difficult to tell when the tremble in his voice is emotion and when it's simple frailty. I like to believe it's the one caused by the other.
Stand-out tracks - The monumental "Hurt" is the show-stopper here, made more emotional by the realisation that Cash is singing with first-hand experience of the subject matter.
The cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is a close second for track of the album. Succinct and direct acoustic guitar backing pushes the song along nicely ...
