Album Notes: There have been few singers who can skirt the issue of category, yet the late Rosemary Clooney remains very much in that class. Like Keely Smith and Tony Bennett, Clooney's easygoing but professional approach effortlessly straddles the divide between pop and jazz with elegance and warmth. SINGS features well-known standards that Clooney could probably sing in her sleep, but she doesn't coast on past glories. Rather, with her mature phrasing and natural swing, she virtually remakes these songs all in a manner that is distinctly hers.
