THE BAND
The Stone Roses or an early incarnation of them formed in 1984 and after a few name changes ('The Patrol ' and 'The English Roses') they settled on The Stone Roses in 1985. The lead singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire had been friends since childhood having lived only a few streets apart in a suburb of Manchester.
After a well received first single 'So Young' in 1985 and a follow up single 'Sally Cinnamon' in 1987 the band began making a LP but after some initial sessions the project was scrapped. The make up of the band underwent some changes and by early 1988 the line up of Brown and Squire was completed with Gary 'Mani' Mountfield on bass and Alan 'Reni' Wren on drums.

Advantages: Beautiful music, Beautiful lyrics Disadvantages: Can be too contemplative
...1983 when it was aired on a BBC radio session since the lyrics seem to condone child abuse. Another subject Morrissey wrote about was the Brady and Hindley the Moors murderers which as a Mancunian myself was a little too close to home. This caused controversy when it was released as the B-side to "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" which marred the fact it was at the time their highest charting single at number 10.

Advantages: The first and finest punk band Disadvantages: None
..., the songs almost always came back a lot faster and with a lot more life than the originals. Other notable covers on this album are The Trashmens 'Surfin Bird', The Searchers 'Needles and Pins' and Tom Waits 'I don't wanna to Grow Up'.
Disc 1 continues along this familiar theme, with many highspots including the banned 'Carbona not Glue', 'Pinhead' which was the source of the Gabba Gabba Hey chant, the surf-influenced 'Sheena is a Punk Rocker' and 'Teenage Lobotomy' among others.

DISC TWO
