...up into 8 parts, entitled Six Degress Of Inner Turbulence (the title track of the album). The structure is a lot like Rush's masterpiece 2112
The disc starts off with the 6 minute long orchestral intro Overture. Drums and guitar come into this piece after a bit, and is a brilliant under-rated Dream Theater song. They have never played this live though due to the many keyboard parts.
About To Crash introduces the scene ... ...soft, melodic and toe tappina at the same time.
Then the metal side of the epic title track starts with the 2 minute long War Inside My Head. This is headbanging stuff with nice angry vocals from James LaBrie.
Then there's a wonderul transition into the next part, The Test That Stumped Them All. This is proper prog metal in some crazy time signature for the main part of it. A funny one to headbang to! More angry vocals, ... more
This is Dream Theater's 6th studio album, released in 2002. This is a 2 disc album, the second disc featuring one 42 minute long track split up into 8 parts. This album shows just how creative and technical, yet melodic Dream Theater can be.
The first disc starts with The Glass Prison. This is full blown heavy progressive metal. This will blow you away when you listen to it. Some bits seem to drag on a bit though after a few listens. Phenomenal head-banging-shredding stuff. Their heaviest song ever, probably.
Blind Faith starts of soft and has a wonderful melody. The piano in this song is the best I have heard from Jordan Rudess. The shredding solo in 5/8 is just WOW. This one grows on you too. This is just too awesome.
Misunderstood is fairly mainstream rock/metal, with some nice chords and an unforgettable melody. The outro is far too long though.
The Great Debate is quite Pain Of Salvation-esque musically in my opinion. Brilliant stuff. This track also grows on you. Many changes in this song. Plenty of louds and softs.
Disappear is actually my favourite on disc 1. I found this a fairly boring song at first, but it is excellent now. It's a wonderful ballad, with brilliant lyrics, among DT's best. IT's just so emotional and it's incredible that a band that produced The Glass Prison can do this.

About To Crash introduces the scene for the album and is prog-rock at it's best. Nice, soft, melodic and toe tappina at the same time.

Goodnight Kiss is the ballad part of this album. Absolutely wonderful. Makes you want to cry.
Solitary Shell, I think, would have done well as a single. This is wonderful mainstream rock with an awesome progressive solo. Nice song to show people new to progressive rock.
About To Crash (Reprise) is like About To Crash but faster and more rocky - Van Halen style. The verses are different and the solo is in 6/8 and features some nice parts.
Losing Time/Grand Finale is just the perfect ender for an album. So epic, and you just have to listen on.
This is a masterpiece of an album, but I've never really got round to listening to it much. Some of the tracks get a bit old after a while and you end up listening to only bits of it. This isn't an album you have to listen to all the way through. It sounds better a few tracks at a time.
This probably isn't the best place to start for Dream Theater. It's a great album, and I reccomend it to anyone into epic hard rock/progressive metal. However, the second disk will appeal to anyone who likes classical/piano-based rock/prog-rock/epic stuff.
This album is really hard to describe, but it's well worth a listen. My 3rd favourite Dream Theater album.

Disc 2
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
The title track of the album. Adds upto a total whopping length of 42 minutes 04 seconds. OK i know what most of you are thinking, "42 minutes 04 seconds long, that will just eventually get boring after the first 15 minutes or so............" well your completely wrong. Listening to this song just makes you want to listen to it again and then again after that. It just shows you how good of musicians ... ...to create good music. The overture for the or instrumental introduction i should say, to the track is so classical sounding and so much thought has gone into it that you would think an amazing composer from the 16th century such as Bach will have created it. The song is separated into several sectors (tracks) to save you having to fast forward and rewind in the song as it is so long. the name of each track which it is separated into are as follows:

Advantages: Technically sound. Melodic progressive rock Disadvantages: Mixing isn't perfect, but is replaced by good music!
There is only one word that can describe this album - amazing. Technically it is complex, the melodies and harmonies very advanced. John Petrucci shows his ability to play this guitar with melodic and ryhthmically complex solos and riffs. James LaBrie uses high soft yet powerful voice to bring more texture into the music. Whilst this album has soft instrumentals, the progressive metal element, characteristic of dreamtheater is still captured and ...

Album Notes
Dream Theater: James LaBrie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar, background vocals); Jordan Rudess (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Portnoy (percussion). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studios and Little Bear Studios, Suffern, New York between March & August 2001. On this, Dream Theater's seventh studio effort, the heavier elements of the band's music come to the forefront. Although the masterful balance of rhythmic interplay, jazzy arrangement, and catchy melodies is ever-present on this two-disc offering, the strong, crunchy guitar sound and powerhouse percussion are pushed more into prominence, helped along by the crystal clear production of drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci. The first disc is comprised of five tracks, averaging about 10 minutes each and the second disc is a 42-minute opus complete with overture and finale. The length of the songs, rather than being a hindrance, allows for both a sense of completeness and an improvisational element to the tracks, making them fun to listen to. The virtuoso skills of each instrumentalist are shown in running keyboard lines, pounding bass lines, and finger-twisting guitar solos. This mastery is expressed even more through the control heard in the slow, moving moments, especially the disc one closer "Disappear." Vocalist James Labrie solidifies his status as one of progressive metal's finest voices, hammering home strong, mid-range vocal lines with comfort and feeling. Definitely a worthy listening experience.
