Williamson PArk - the park on a hill

Advantages: Beautiful surroundings and free entry
Disadvantages: A bit hilly

Edwardian Baroque building was designed by John Belcher and was built between 1907 and 1909 by millionaire industrialist Baron Ashton in memory of his second wife, Jessy. Over the earlier years the Memorial fell into disrepair but was completely restored in 1986-7. It now hosts exhibitions and concerts and can be hired for private functions, including wedding ceremonies The first floor outdoor viewing gallery gives fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and across Morecambe Bay. To the left the lovely old Lancaster Castle and the Priory Church are clear to see while to the right you can follow the path of the River Lune flows through the city and into Morecambe Bay. The Forest of Bowland, Lake District, Blackpool Tower and Isle of Man are all in view. The Williamson Galleryis situated on the second floor of the Memorial ...

Review of Williamson Park, Lancaster

Would you want to live on this road?

Advantages: thrilling read
Disadvantages: none

Joy Fielding has been writing great suspense novels since about the early eighties. Each one I have read has been a terrific page turner which has kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through! Mad River Road was another such book and did not disappoint in the least! There are four main characters in Mad River Road. Jamie Kellogg is lonely and vulnerable. She has had one failed marriage and has just discovered that her boyfriend is actually married. When she meets the charming Brad Fisher, who says all the right things to her - telling her how clever and beautiful she is - she falls for him right away. It's not long before she has given up her job and allowed him to persuade her to go on an adventure travelling halfway across America. However, what seemed at first to be a dream adventure soon turns into her worst nightmare ...

Review of Mad River Road - Joy Fielding

The Secret River

Advantages: Great descriptions of the times, Australia
Disadvantages: None

The Secret River London 1806 - William Thornhill, happily wedded to his childhood sweetheart Sal, is a waterman on the River Thames. Life is tough but bearable until William makes a mistake, a bad mistake for which he and his family are made to pay dearly. His sentence: to be transported to New South Wales for the term of his natural life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the book of the month at our book club and is probably not a book I would have chosen for myself but is an extremely interesting portrail into life for people in that age and of the two countries. This story is basically in two parts, Will's London life and then his Australian life. The two are most definitely linked to each other but in terms of Will's and Sal's feelings and adventures they are worlds apart, or you could say continents apart. The story ...
