on scrambling brains like eggs on drugs (or something like that) on an album that sees the return to top form. Now something of an institution, the group consolidate their largely white audience of metal kids, with a record that effortlessly mines the sport metal/hip-hop crossover on "Rock Superstar" (courtesy of Sen Dog who sneaks back on board with his funk metal group in tow). Think Puffy's skip hop rip of "Kashmir", but with head-banging balls. Rock theatrics aside, Muggs' hip-hop production is as edgy as ever. Check the chilling threat of "Cuban Necktie" which pulls out strings that tether the listener like a lariat. "Rap Superstar" is no-punches-pulled expose of the shady side of the music business. A tale of backstabbers, dollar bills and a healthy dose of paranoia narrated documentary style by Eminem and Noreaga. The high life goes helter skelter. --Chris Campion

Now i am all for musical development - i recognise that sticking to the same style leads to stagnation and boredom. Some of my favourite albums ever, like "shape of punk to come" by Refused or "Dear You" by Jawbreaker, are the result of bands changing their styles, sometimes radically. But when Cypress Hill made the ill advised decision to go rap-metal, they forgot to write some good songs, and this is their downfall. Witness the one note riff of "can't get the best of me" - played by Dino Cazares apparently, but a five year old could have thought of it. These songs all have crunching riffs and straightforward, bouncing rhythms, but little else. Even B-Real, whose voice i usually like a lot, reeeeally starts to annoy me on these songs. And whose idea was it to let Sen Dog do more? His shouting is even worse than his rapping!
One highlight comes in "Dust", where they do the cool "scratching-along-with-the-riff" technique as famed by incubus in "redefine". But their pitfall was putting two versions of the same song ("rap superstar" and, gosh, "rock superstar") on the album. "rap superstar" is not only infinitely better but much, much less cringeworthy - i mean, if you're gonna add guitars to a rap song, at least have the decency than to make them just go "chug chug chug chug" along with the beat.
The sad thing is, the mainly rap first disc is no better. It's Cypress Hill's afformentioned tried-and-tested formula, but done very badly, and with some very silly traces of misogynism coming through on "cuban necktie" - not a good idea! Hardly any songs about drugs too, which surely shows that something is up in CH land, ;) This album may make Cypress Hill a shedload of easily-impressed new rap metal fans (and it has), but i think they will be balanced out by the amount of long-term fans this record alienates. Oh and 2 CD's is far too long for any rap or rap metal album, let alone one that's a combination of BOTH...
So you thought you knew Cypress hill. They've done it again those nasal whining, dope obsessed horror core hipsters Cypress hill, and they've brought out another cracking album Called 'Skull & Bones'. So this is thier fifth briliant album which take them to the next level, with out losing the ability to to write a memorable chorus. The trademark Cypress hill sound still rears its ugly head in the creaky violins of 'Cuban Necktie' and the addams family ...

...hill, but that is because skull and bones offers something fresh and exciting. It isn't like the old cypress hill in fact it is more reminisant of rage against the machine as they take the more rap metal approach. It is always exciting when your favourite band trys something new but there is always the element of fear that it just won't match their previous work, but there is no fear of that here. with fantastic new sounds like 'can't get the best ... ...sound of 'intro' is unforgetable. If you buy this album don't expect black sunday, or you may be dissapointed, but that doesn't mean this is any less of an album, it is a ground breakin cd that will really get you chillin after that skunky bong, or big fat reefer ...

Advantages: Great tunes, Rap & Rock Disadvantages: Not many
...came a long awaited realsie, Skull & Bones. This came with not one but 2 cds, quiet impresive. More still it catered for two tastes, Rap and Rock. We first heard Rap/Rock superstar which was great but to popey and it was in the charts, but the rest of the songs on both Cds are damned fine, Loook at "stink ass ho" and "Valy of chrome" different styles, both great sounds I have even started to listen to a bit of rock due to this. The Hill have certainly ...

This is an excellent album by an excellent band. The whole albumis great andnot just the hit single Superstar (Rap & Rock). Cypress Hill have once again managed to combine Forceful Rap Lyrics with Excellent ock Music. There are two Cd's The first is more Rap than Rock. The second Cd is more for the Rock enthusiast.
If you have never bought a Cypress Hill album before this woud be a good pick as it highlights several oftheir talents rather than just ...

Having been a cypress hill fan for years i eagerly awaited their "Skull and bones" album . And when i got it i was pleasantly suprised . The album has two CDs the first one "skull" is more f what you`d exepct from thr hill, fat beats and sharp rhymes but the other CD "Bones" is more of a ride to the hard rock side of things but with the rap influences still there . Some may critisize their change of direction but i think it can make the reache to ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Skull And Bones - Cypress Hill"
Advantages: classic album, perfect smoking music Disadvantages: you either like cypress hill or you hate them
If you read my review of "skull and bones" and thought it was a bit harsh, then this is the reason. This is classic CypressHill - more consistently good than the patchy s/t album that preceded it, and less spliffed out than the follow up "temples of boom", this album is full of rousing hip hop that succeeds because, unlike "skull and bones", it doesn't try anything new or unfamiliar. "i want to get high" and "hits from the bong" are the blissed out tunes, perfect for having a summer bunning session to. "lick a shot" and "three little putos" (the best track on the album) are much more aggressive propositions, with fuzzed out and blasting basslines clashing with raucous beats and squealing, tripped out sound effects. It's also worth noting that this album was before CH got all their stupid entourage on percussion - doing that made ...
