Advantages: Good old horror movie Disadvantages: Old horror movie
son see ghosts around the hotel, will he and his mum be able to stay safe in the hotel until the end of the contract in May?
The film is based on a Stephen King novel and has become one of the classics. I really wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I don't think it would really be fair to compare a film like this, made in 1980, with today's standards. The style back then was clearly different, and the emphases was more on creating an atmosphere and ideas that would stick in people's minds. For instance, in The Exorcist, the thing that made it effective was saying that people who believed in possession were vulnerable to it, then trying to convince us of how real it is, so that you come out trying to convince everyone that you think it's nonsense but at the back of your mind you wonder "what if". Advantages: Jack Nicholson is fantastic as a maniac! Disadvantages: The acting can be a little 'forced'
and shouts " Heres Johnny!".
DVD Extras
~~~~~~~~~
I did not expect this DVD to have any extras as it is quite an old film but to my surprise there are some and these are:
* Vivian Kubrick's Behind the Scenes Documentary "The Making of the Shining" - this is about 45 minutes long and like it says is a documentary about how the film came to be made. You can have the optional commentary from Vivian Kubrick herself.
* Interactive Menus
* Scene Access
* Trailer
My Opinion
~~~~~~~~~
In my opinion this is a classic horror film from an exceptionally talented writer (King) and an equally talented director (Kubrick). Both must have such sick and twisted minds to produce such a haunting film between them. But I loved it! I remember watching it when I was much younger (too young to watch it really) and I had nightmares for about ...
The Shining is a 1980 horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick which is based a Stephen King novel of the same name. It stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd.
Jack Torrence (Nicholson) is a writer who accepts the job as a caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, which always gets snowed in during the winter, and so becomes completely isolated. He is warned that the last caretaker got cabin fever and killed his family and himself, but Jack just wants some peace and quiet in order to write. So he takes his wife Wendy (Duvall) and his son Danny (Lloyd) up to the hotel on the closing day, where they meet the elderly cook, Dick Halloran (Scatman Crothers). He surprises Danny by talking with him telepathically and asking him if he wants an ice cream. When alone, he explains that he and his grandmother shared this incredible gift ...
