This is a change from the normal Def Leppard rock 'till you drop kind of music. It's an album that did not do particularly well ... Def Lep fans, myself included, simply didn't like the changes and experiments that the guys had implemented. It just doesn't sound like a Def Leppard album.

Song 1 - Truth? =============== This is bass-heavy number with some interesting guitar and vocal effects throughout. The song gells together nicely and is a good song to start with. It gives an indication of the rest of the album ... if you don't like this song you're unlikely to like the rest of the material.
8/10
Song 2 - Turn to Dust ===================== Starts off sounding quite Arabian before continuing on a relatively slow tempo which doesn't speed up much during the chorus. Contains bursts of heavy power chords. This is a slightly lacklustre song which only really comes to life for me during the solo. Disappointing.

Song 3 - Slang ============== The title song is indulgent 'old skool' Def Leppard. A minimalistic all-out fun'n'sexy rocker. Guitars are a little under-employed for my tastes, however, although they've done a fair amount of similar work in the past. There is a very sexy-sounding interlude (with a Spanish female voice thrown in). If you like Def Leppard's other stuff, you'll like this but sadly it might be the only one you DO like.
6/10
Song 4 - All I Want is Everything ================================= A slow ballad but not one I find particularly inspiring. It's rather boring with very little variation although the lyrics aren't too bad. However, it's one of those 'track skip' songs.
3/10
Song 5 - Work it Out ==================== This one starts off with plenty of reverb which continues through to the chorus, amidst a lot of string scratching. As a typical rule, what makes a Def Leppard song is the chorus ... here, it is the opposite. The chorus is bland while the verses are quite interesting, as is the solo. This song is probably best described as one that shows budding guitarists what is possible with a good stomp box!
5/10
Song 6 - Breath a Sigh ====================== A VERY SLOOOOOW accoustic song along the lines of some of Bon Jovi's slower ballads. The chorus is pure Def Leppard in that there's heavy use of vocal harmonies. It's not actually a bad song to listen to if you want to put your feet up with a glass of wine, or fancy a close clinch with your girlfriend/boyfriend. It's probably one of those songs you either love or hate.
7/10
Song 7 - Deliver Me =================== This is pure NIRVANA!! The style of this song owes more to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" than "Pour Some Sugar On Me." The verses are slow with minimal guitars while the song kicks into more life during the chorus with Joe pushing out his lungs more than at almost any part of this album. As a song on its own right, it's reasonable enough to listen to from time to time.
7/10
Song 8 - Gift of Flesh ====================== Starts off 'old skool' rock a la Alice Cooper but then the guitars ease off a little while still keeping that 'old skool' sound. The guitars return with a vengeance in the chorus. This is a song you can jump up and down to and is one of the better ones on the album. Even the production team seem to have tried to make this song sound like an older rock song. It's pretty effective stuff.
8/10
Song 9 - Blood Runs Cold ======================== Another VERY SLLLLOOOOOW song and one that the album could have well done without. One very slow ballad is enough for one album. At times it sounds like Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U". The lyrics are actually pretty good and the song picks up slightly during the second half but unlike "Breath a Sigh", the lyrical content of this song doesn't give it such a romantic edge. As a result there's nothing to really keep you coming back to it.
6/10
Song 10 - Where Does Love Go When It Dies ========================================= A rather long title and a rather long-winded song that does little for the album. It's a strange little song. At times I'm almost expecting Joe to start singing "Kumbaya". It's a very soft strong ... another VERY SLOW acoustic ballad. This makes it too much of a muchness.
4/10
Song 11 - Pearl of Euphoria =========================== Ever heard of a band called U2? I think you immediately get an idea of the style of this song. Another slow song with minimalistic guitars which eventually picks up, albeit only slightly, during the chorus. If you like U2, you'll enjoy this. Joe even starts to sound like Bono in places!
7/10
This was a very brave attempt from the guys and the album is certainly diverse (except for the quantity of ballads). Some of the stuff is actually quite decent. Despite its flaws it's an album I would probably play in the car. I'm in two minds whether or not to recommend it. If you're into Def Leppard, you'll hate it, but if you're into some of the newer bands (such as Puddle of Mudd) then it may be up your street.
So I'll recommend it, but with the above reservations.
Advantages: Not many Disadvantages: Weak writing and poor production
...gone wrong with Def Leppard? Slang is a weak album, which without their previous performances, wouldn't have even got a look at the charts. When a sample filled title track is the best cut from a guitar based rock band, then really it is a disappointment. Although many people said that The Lep's had become formulaic in their writing, at least it rocked, which unfortunately this album does not.
If you were thinking of getting this to add to your ...

Advantages: oringial release, with a lot of great songs. Disadvantages: Not old def leppard, doesnt rock often enough or hard enough.
Def Leppard are known for their fun, although often cheesy, rock songs. With this album they headed in a different direction that maybe not a lot of fans appreciated. Here we have a dark array of songs, and they dont really rock often enough are hard enough, but lyric wise this is the best we've ever seen by Def Leppard. 1)Truth - Easily their most experimental song ever. It can be off putting for some rock fans, but if you get passed the electronic ... ...8/10 2)Turn To Dust - Almost classic Def Leppard here. Still dark lyrics, but an amazing chorus. Good and interesting guitar work here. Should have been the first single. 9.5/10 3)Slang - A good sleazy rock song. But not really my favorite since the lyrics are pretty mediocre here and the instrumental is nothing to brag about 7/10 4)All i Want Is Everything - Amazing ballad! This is what Def Leppard are amazing at. Great lyrics, good and addictive ...

...being different and ever changing! Slang totally represents that hands down! The cd also show each members own talent. With songs like work it out by Vivian!! Great song. Blood runs cold is also a warming tribute to the late Steve Clark. This is a must have cd for any true fan! You cannot condem them for this just because it is different. Remember, in the 80's Hysteria was way different form pyromania and that is what put them at the top!

Advantages: Some very decent pop-rock tracks Disadvantages: The ballads need a little more work
me of DefLeppard's "Slang", and the harmonies over the vocals are reminiscent of their work as well. Like the previous track, this is a song born of the 1980's soft rock scene. It might be a little clichéd, but it's none the less appealing for it.
Rooster decide to have another stab at the ballads with "Deep And Meaningless". Sadly, they're not really any more successful this time around either. This time it's piano led, rather than the acoustic guitar on "To Die For", but they sound a lot better when they're rocking out. There are moments where they do edge towards the 1980s stadium rock style, but for the most part this is just insipid and the harmonies make them sound more like Boyzone or Westlife than DefLeppard with this musical backing.
"On The Road" is very much along the same lines as "You're So Right For Me". There ...

sounding effects - not from the 70's disco age, but from the Stock-Aitken-Waterman school of disco, from the 1980's. The band tried something similar with "Slang", the title track from 1995's "Slang" album, and it sounds so unlike DefLeppard that it sticks out, but not in a good way. Fortunately, it's the shortest track, and only lasts for two and a half minutes.
"Cry" has a great rock guitar, but the vocal is distorted, a little like "Truth?", again from 1995's "Slang". As that was, in my opinion, DefLeppard's worst album, it's not a well-received inclusion. "Girl Like You" has a vocal that wouldn't sound too out of place as an American TV theme tune, which is not meant as a compliment, and by the time the chorus comes in, it would again fit quite nicely on "Slang", or perhaps 1999's "Euphoria". NME described this track as a "Hard ...

Def Leppard: Phil Collen (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Vivian Campbell (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, dulcimer); Rick Savage (vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesized bass, bass); Joe Elliott (vocals, guitar, bass); Rick Allen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Craig Pruess (conductor, arranger); Gloria Flores (vocals); Gavyn Wright (strings); Pete Woodroffe (piano, keyboards); Av Singh (dohl); Brad Buxer, Bobby Brooks, Hugh Drumm, Ger McDonnell (programming). Recorded in Spain and Fine Bow Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. With '80s hard rock all but dead and gone by the mid-'90s, Def Leppard rethought their approach and resurfaced with 1996's SLANG. The indulgences that rocketed Leppard to the top of the charts a decade earlier were stripped away as the veteran band attempted to stay in step with the new alternative rock acts. While SLANG didn't hit the charts as hard as such past classics as PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA, it contained its share of highlights, namely "Work it Out," "All I Want is Everything," and "Blood Runs Cold." The group would revisit their original sound with their next release, 1999's EUPHORIA.
