Advantages: Great uplifting album Disadvantages: bit behind times
...In their decadent heyday, the pretty boys of Duran Duran were the crown princes of a fledgling MTV, but drugs, hubris and a few dodgy albums reduced this supergroup to has-beens. Now, twenty-one years since the original Fab Five's last studio album together, the band's classic lineup has returned. The bleach jobs and posturing remain, but the band has thankfully ditched the "Wild Boys" pomp rock that was its undoing. Instead, Astronaut revitalizes Duran's early synth-pop magic. The lush, moody tones of "Point of No Return" and uplifting charm of "Finest Hour" recall the seductive sounds of Rio and remind us that Duran always had a knack for radiant melodies. On "Sunrise," the catchy first single, only Simon LeBon and Co.'s sneering harmonies could turn unabashedly ridiculous lyrics such as "Put your hands into the big sky. . . ./Feel...

...all over the place, distorted chord meddling, creepy sound effects, punchy bass solos seem to get completely lost in the mists of Rick's arcane keyboards and sound effects.
In comparison with Floyd's later albums, the Piper at the gates of dawn remains solely unique amongst the group. The unfortunate and tragic mental breakdown of the bands founder member Syd Barret resulted in many patchy and bitty albums e.g. Ummagumma,Relics,Atom heart mother. Meddle seemed to launch the band into the Roger Waters era of the 3 infamous concept albums 'DSOTM', Wish you were here' and 'Animals'. After the crowning throne was put to Pink Floyd this would be the height of their success when 'the Wall' was released, then came the Gilmour era with both albums 'A momentary lapse of reason' and 'Division bell' carrying floyd into the 90's. The Waters era one...

Advantages: The beginning of the jazz/rock-fusion era Disadvantages: I don't think so
...by an amazing repetitive melodic phrase by the violin. And the guitar enders. I imagine the faces of all the warm blooded jazz-heads at the time listening to that record. The guitar distortion is more dirty than the one Jimi Hendrix used. Throughout the song, Mclaughlin improvises over the ostinato with Billy Cobham doubling parts of his phrases. Amazing start. The record at it's whole is a pure gem. The next song, "dawn", follows a more smooth funky jazz approach with incredible Rhodes work by keyboardist Jan Hammer. The next song is a pure fusion one. If there is a standard fusion beat for drummers, a good canditate is for sure the beat of Billy Cobham on Noonward Race. "A lotus on Irish streams" continues, and a great ballad strongly influenced by Irish folk music is created. Watchout for the amazing work of Jan Hammer in the Grandpiano. Hmmm, I...
