This is a great album, well balanced and full of lyrical, accomplished songs that are Sweet and edgy at the same time. It is certainly good enough for me to buy the new album as soon as I can find it.
This is a folk album, first and last, and includes 'Our Town' a track written by Iris Dement which was featured as an example on the 'Mercury Prize' album from 1999, which is where I first heard her and why I bought the album. This is her second album, Her first was Hourglass and her latest is 'Little Lights' released this year. All of these are on Pure Records, see www.purerecords.demon.co.uk. The Demon in there may make it look like an amateur outfit, but listen to her album and see why that isn't the case. That site also serves as Kate Rusby's homepage.
The album as a whole shows off the range of her voice, her accomplished piano and guitar playing and a well developed sense of humour.
The Tracks
§ The Cobblers Daughter
Witty, lyrically acrobatic story of an innocent young man lured to his doom by wily young girl with inbred family, apparently. Not sure that is how it was supposed to seem.
§ I Wonder What is Keeping My True Love This Night
Lament by a young girl with a wayward lover who appears to have had his wicked way (in true folk styleee) and then had it away on his toes.
§ The Fairest of all Yarrow
Strangely, another lament by a girl whose bethrothed has found another.
§ The Unquiet Grave
Another lament by a young girl whose lover has died this time. She sits on his grave until his ghost appears and tells her to pull herself together because he can't sleep in his grave for her moping. A sad, piano based track.
§ Sho Heen
The loss of youth, innocence and that guardian angel. Or possibly boyfriend. Much keening and atmospheric, slow bodram playing.
§ Sweet Bride
A lady who has seemingly lost her lover is walking to the see, it being the only joy left in her life, when a likely lad on a white steed offers to carry her off to his castle under the sea. The promise of silk sheets wins the day and off she goes. Be a bit damp under the sea wouldn't they ?
§ All God's Angels
Young girl fancies a bloke, he knocks her up and not unreasonably, she wants to marry him. Saddly he is a) already married and b) couldn't possibly marry the likes of her. Naturally, she is not impressed so she runs off into a field and dies. Duet with Tim O'Brien.
A sailor compares girls to geese and then tries to chat one up. She knocks him back so he goes back to sea. With Dave Burland.
§ The Duke and the Tinker
A bored young duke and his mates find a drunk. They strip him off and carry him back to the castle where they put him to bed in fine sheets. Hmm. He wakes up, thinks I'll have a bit of this, eats a massive slap up meal, gets totally raked on fine brandy passes out and - you'll never guess - wakes up next morning in the forest.
§ Our Town (written by Iris Dement)
Nostalgia for the old home town which has fallen on hard times, although I can't see Kate Rusby having sat in a bar for forty years, her being about half that age. Beautifully sung, nevertheless.
§ The Sleepless Sailor
A song about a sailor who craves his womans arms when at sea and the arms of the sea when he is home again. Typical bloke, can't commit. With Roger Wilson.

I agree, I love Kate Rusby. Actually I hate her, because she's gorgeous, funny, has a voice like an angel and can play the guitar. OK I'm only jealous!

Wow, I can't believe someone on here knows who Kate Rusby is - respect :). I went to one of her concerts once and I actually met her and she is really sweet and nice. The concert was amazing, you could cut through the atmosphere! Thanks for the read.

I remember Joan Baez singing the Unquiet Grave, but I've never heard of this lass, time to check her out I guess...Baz
