with his boastful debut, Born to Do It. More than two years later, David has slogged through the minefields of sudden stardom and lived to sing about it, which he does with stylish aplomb. He has sacrificed some of his milk-fed innocence, but none of his braggadocio, as the title attests. His sound is harder, more anxious, and much more suitable for clubs than the soft, breezy nu-soul of his first outing. This time he's dealing with darker stuff, whether it's the press's relentless scrutiny of him or warning of the dangerous pitfalls of fame ("I'm not the man I used to be"). He's not the man he used to be, for fame seems to have shaken the scales from his eyes. This one-time wide-eyed romantic no longer pines for his perfect love, instead casting a rather jaundiced eye at the women vying for attention on "What's Your Flava." But his newfound complexity and edge makes for a much more interesting album than his debut. It's a relief to watch Craig David trading in his clean-cut pop styling for a much more urban edge, rife with old school R&B and hip-hop style. --Jaan Uhelszki

As I’ve recently reviewed one of my favourite albums, Craig David’s “Born to Do It”, I thought it was about time to review his second album, released earlier this year.
Due to the worldwide success and positive reviews of his first album, Craig had a lot to live up to with “Slicker than your average”. Craig had all but disappeared from the musical scene, after being shafted at the Brit Awards, instead he took time out to record some new material, for this album.
Slicker than your Average can be purchased for £8.99 at CD Wow.
The title track, and fist track on the album sounds off with a backing echoing voice, with Craig’s voice over the top, before the main vocals are introduced. I am still not sure about this song despite listening to it many times. It is almost as if it was thrown together with no thought about the music. There is some scratching in the middle, but the majority of the song is spoken rather than sung, plus for those of you who can’t abide Craig, he does say his name a lot in this track, and it is about him being a cut above the rest!
My rating: 6/10
"What’s your Flava?" Is the first track that was released as a single and is one of my favourite tracks on the album. The song immediately launches into a fast beat, with Craig singing very fast and is a song about meeting a new girl, with a twist – sexual of course, but with added food. There are references to hot fudge sauce, walnut whips and ice cream, and talk of fantasies too. A dance floor stomper.
“I met this fly girl in the club Went by the name of pecan deluxe This ice cream was high maintenance”
My rating 10/10
"Fast Cars" begins with the sound of a heavy metal door closing, and the sound of a car window smashing, which sets an alarm off. The music then comes in, which is quite a heavy rock based feel, with drums, guitars and Craig’s vocals. This track has lots of sexual connotations and innuendos. The lyrics compares Craig and his conquests to a car and includes such lines as “Feel the ride, feel the rush, the moment I tease your clutch”. The backing track is quite strange on this as it ranges between echoing, to an almost gospel type feel. The track ends up with a police radio in a helicopter with the sound of a speeding car.
My rating: 8/10
"Hidden Agenda" follows straight on from the last track, and has a soft feel with the guitar and brushed drums, although the track itself is a bouncy fast one. This track is the first to show Craig’s range of tone, and has him reaching for the high notes, that he can do so well. The song shows Craig observing that most men have a hidden agenda at the beginning of a relationship, apart from him, and in it he promises to be there for the girl when it all goes wrong.
My rating: 10/10
"Eeenie Meenie" begins with almost the same tune as Fast Cars, a dark, almost threatening beat, before the vocals begin. However, it then chills out and the vocals are sung very quickly. The song tells of a relationship ending, and the choice of who is going to have the final word. However, the middle of the track slows down, before rapping begins over the top of the music, and the last part sees a DJ talking over the music.
My rating 7/10
"You don’t miss your water" sees the tempo slowing down again. The song begins with a solitary piano, and Craig’s vocals on this track are unlike any I’ve heard before. The song has an almost 80’s feel to it and is a gorgeous ballad about love and how many relationships are taken for granted with the line “You don’t miss your water until the well runs dry”.
My rating 9/10
"Rise and Fall" is a duet with Sting, and the track begins with Sting’s vocals, which are laid down with an echo. The track then begins in earnest, with the backing of a harpsichord, guitar and drum. After the introduction, Craig’s vocals come in. This track tells of how the media can build celebrities up to super stardom, but are always there to see them fall rapidly, and are quick to stick the boot in. The combination of Craig’s and Sting’s voices is wonderful, although Craig does sing most of the track alone, apart from the chorus. However, Sting does do the backing vocals, and there is a mention of “the shape of your heart”, one of Sting’s own songs. The track ends up with Sting singing an echoing vocal, exactly as at the beginning. A class track, which has been released in many mixed versions already.
My rating 10/10
"Personal" begins with an oriental feel, with tinkling bells, before the introduction of a steady slow drum beat and the vocals. This is a slow track, which tells of the first sexual experience in a relationship. Although the lyrics in this track to sometimes convey Craig’s immaturity, it is a great song, and quite a horny one.
“I’m behind you in your bedroom with your hands against the wall But keeping one eye on the door”
My rating 9/10
"Hands up in the Air" starts off with Craig talking about parties, with a fast, yet quiet drum beat, and the guitar. An upbeat song, although I think the range of vocals in this is too much, flipping from low to high too often, in the first verse. As the song progresses, it does improve, but it’s too little too late and is not one of my favourites.
My rating 6/10
"2 steps" begins with a Spanish type guitar and Craig’s vocals come in very quickly. A ballad to begin, but the song speeds up and becomes a foot tapping, head nodding tune. The song tells of taking one step forward, then two back in a relationship, and questions why.
My rating 7/10
"What’s changed?" begins with the fast guitar and a female vocal asking “Why do you wanna play these games with me?” before Craig’s vocals are introduced. A fast track, and the combination of the two voices gives a feelgood feel, although the song is predominantly about a relationship that’s going through a rocky patch.
My rating 7/10
The last track "World filled with Love" sounds like The Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour”, but after the introduction, the track slows down and mellows out a fraction, before evolving into a good catchy song. Although there is a Beatles feel in the background throughout, Craig manages to capture some R&B too. I’d just like to ask who bought John Lennon back from the dead to provide the backing vocals?
My rating 8/10
So….what’s my verdict? To be honest Craig could have just put the 8 tracks on this album and left it at that. I didn’t feel there was one naff track on Born to Do It, but Slicker is a bit of a disappointment overall, although there are some tracks that stand out from the rest such as “Rise and Fall” and “What’s your Flava?”
It was always going to be difficult to duplicate the success of the first album, and Craig really does seem to have taken 2 steps back, no pun intended.
There is a mixture of songs on the album, some of which have already been released, but to be honest, the strongest ones have been in the charts, Craig, do me a favour and don’t punish yourself and release any more from this album. It will all end in tears.
Advantages: experimenting with different styles, a change from the first album, some clever lyrics Disadvantages: one or two weak songs
...with love 1. SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE - this song begins immediately with a great lively sound. a repetitive piece of music plays in the background. great rhythm mid pace. with the title of this song it sounds a bit like he loves himself but he has a great sound. with this song he likes to experiment with his singing he does very high notes with his voice which he can easily reach then he goes deep but also keeps to his usual smooth sound. this ... ...your average which will be in your head all day. this could be a possible future single it has everything a single needs. this is a good song because in a way it is like his old sound but there is also something very new about it so he can't go wrong with it. this song tells a story it's about Craig facing a lot of criticism about how he wouldn't last and wouldn't do well but he sings about how he's on his second album and doing well. He is basically ...

...an insult to say that Slicker Than Your Average doesn't live up to Born To Do It, but I sincerely believe it does.
Firstly I am going to look at the album track by track:
1. SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE - Not the strongest track on the album but still a good song. The song is very American sounding and lacks a chorus but does have a great beat and superb chat. 8/10
2. WHATS YOUR FLAVA - The first single from the album. I believe releasing this as ... ...5 or 6 better tracks on the album. However the lyrics are great and although this song also lacks a gripping chorus, the verses are well structured. 8/10
3. FAST CARS - An another American sounding song but none the less a quality track. The chorus on this song is much better and the verses and hook don't disapoint. This combined with a great beat and a little Knightrider Theme make a strong track. 9/10
4. HIDDEN AGENDA - The second single to be ...

Craig's second album Slicker than your average features some songs which are similar in production to the first, awesome guitar/ piano riffs with basic drums and bass such as the infectious "Hidden Agenda" and "You Don't Miss Your Water" but there is also a clear progression here. Advantages: Craig David is back... Disadvantages: ...and has become a crooner.
One of the most cruelest acts in music history has to be when Craig David was cheated out of several Brit awards in 2000 and this album, following the success of “Born To do it” is clearly a response to that. "Slicker Than Your Average" is Craig David’s second album after a break in which he took America by storm and turned down a record deal by a certain P. Diddy. Perhaps the music bosses should bite their tongues cause Craig’s clearly all over ... ..."What's Changed" are true to the "Walking away"/"7 days" formula but the album lacks a a couple of garage tunes. "Rise & Fall" featuring Sting will definitely stand as one of the albums highlights. Stings vocals compliment David's, combining the rough with the smooth groove.
Any hot young mama (like myself, if I do say so!) will find Craig’s latest offering a joy to listen to and try as you might I guarantee you will have to staple your feet to ...

Advantages: Another classic album from the singer with a sexy soulful voice. Disadvantages: Not long enough
With the success of his lastest single Rise and Fall featuring Sting, Craid David has once again proved to the British public that he is back, and back to stay. His album has sold even more copies since this release, and is an excellent album. Craig sings some beautiful soulful songs, which really melt your heart. In turn he also has some 2 step garage tracks to please all fans.
Highly recommended to people who love soulful R&B love songs, and hip ...

Advantages: Some good songs on here Disadvantages: More Hip Hop then R'n'B
I loved CraigDavid's first song "Fill Me In" as it was catchy Pop/R'n'B ish and was just a great tune for the time it was out. I bought the album Born to Do it and it was such a great album. After he went away to america for a bit i couldn't wait for him to come out again with new material. I don't think this album did as well as his first album, but at least we got to hear new stuff from British Born craig.
1. SlickerThanYourAverage ~ I felt this song was more Hip Hop than this older stuff. To me it sounds like Usher or B2K could sing it and you could obviously tell he got his influences from American male R'n'B/Hip Hop artists. Not a great way to open the album but i would give it a 5/10.
2. What's Your Flava? ~ Absolutely loved this song. I'm so glad he released this as his first single from the album. I loved ...

Album Notes
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Craid David (vocals); Sting (vocals). Producers: Marshall & Trell, Mark Hill, Soulshock & Karlin. Englishman Craig David's countrymen hold him and his work in high esteem; no less iconic a musical personage than Sir Elton John has been known to sing David's praises. Naturally, though, in the world of R&B what matters most is how this former DJ stacks up alongside his US contemporaries. Fortunately for both him and us, David compares quite favorably. In fact, the vibrant, often surprising production on the deceptively titled SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE immediately stands apart from so many of the cookie-cutter soundalikes with which this particular field is cluttered. Sure, David mixes R&B, pop, and hip-hop flavors like any contemporary R&B man would, but as the old saying goes, "it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it." Leave it to a Brit to cut the Yanks at their own game. Funky syncopation and danceable tempos are the order of the day ("Fast Cars," "Eenie Meenie"), but David's got a swoon-worthy voice that can wrap itself around a ballad just as easily, as shown on the heart-melter "You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til the Well Runs Dry)." All in all, David's second time out of the gate is fully as successful as his first.
