onset of maturity has been particularly rapid. Its like they got on the bus with their debut Up All Night, all tight jeans and scrappy attitude, winging a childs fare and yet by the time they sat down they were in comfy slacks, pulling a financial supplement from their jacket pocket for light reading and asking the kids at the back to pipe down. Their eponymous second record unapologetically disposed of the fervour and sense of place of Up All Night, pursuing instead a universal sense of melody and more generic themes. It is this vein that they build on with Phase 3, aka Slipaway Fires, and having already engaged the mainstream, Johnny Borrell now makes a big play to be prompted alongside some of the greats. With the sentimental piano balladry of Wire to Wire and The House he positions himself between Dont Look Back in Anger and Elton John. On You & the Rest and 60 Thompson he goes after Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan respectively. The eye-openers are exaggerated cliché Tabloid Lover which is like The Who, Queen and Roxette forced into a space too small for them all and Stinger, arching soft rock ballad with a perm. Its an ambitious project in advancing the Razorlight template and sometimes it probably pushes too far, but a glimmer remains throughout and Slipway Fires wont be the record to halt their ascent. --James Berry

Razorlight (a London band) got together in 2002. The band are made up of Singer/guitarist Johnny Borrell and guitarist/singer and Swedish ex-pat Björn Ågnen, bassist Carl Dalemo and drummer Christian Smith-Pancorvo.
Recordings made at London's Toe Rag studios eventually led to radio play which helped begin the spreading of attention for this band. They were eventually signed to Mercury Records 2003.
They set about recording their debut album, whilst touruing and doing lots of gigs. Reports were great for nearly all their live performances and the hype about this band began to mount.
Although some of the original members of the Razorlight quit the band, this didnt stop them making their official debut album 'Up All Night' in August 2004. This album was really good in content and deliverance but Slipway Fires is by far their greatest album. Especially with bombshell songs like 'North London Trash'-lyrically cutting, with witty and perceptive analogies of scenie-boppers in my home town of North London. Truly is the kind of song that becomes a mantra and comes to mind whenever you pass one of the dudey kids in town.
Their sound is Brit Pop Indie but ranges in style on this album from pumpy catchy parodies to subtle delicate ballad style songs and the range is really indicative of the vast talent that this band have.

Musically they are really tight and innovative with dingling guitar riffs and steady drums, but the thing that elevates this band to true greatness is their insightful and thought provoking lyrrics. Each song has a really listenable set of poetic verse that is often really street-wise and intelligently composed.
I really rate this band highly and I am sure if you give them a chance, then you will too.
Summary: This band really do set the scene alight with innovacy and sophistication of lyrics.
Advantages: Singing is excellent, some great tracks here Disadvantages: Just one or two off tracks
...released their latest album - Slipway Fires. And it hasn't dissapointed. All the songs are up to the usual Razorlight standard bar a couple of off ones. The lyrics are interesting like all Razorlight tracks previously. I love Johnny Burrell's voice on here; He really makes the album. The bass, drums and everything else which goes into these tracks are really good here. The production tops them off. As of yet just two tracks off Slipway Fires. They ... ...great songs on here. My personal favourites, apart from the two singles, are 'Tabloid Lover', 'Blood for Wild Blood' and 'The House'. Overall, Slipway Fires by Razorlight is a great album with just a few tracks that aren't as good, and should definitely be added to your collection. . ...

Album Notes
For its third full-length studio album, SLIPAWAY FIRES, the British alt-rock act Razorlight opts for a more intimate outing. Tempering fast-paced, guitar-heavy tunes with pensive piano ballads (see the plaintive single "Wire to Wire"), the record gives brash Britpop poster boy Johnny Borrell a chance to reveal his introspective side.
