Album Notes: Personnel: A.C. Newman (vocals, guitar, recorder, melodion, bass guitar, tambourine, drum programming); Sarah Wheeler (vocals); Dave Carswell (E-bow); Shane Nelken (autoharp, piano); Megan West (cello); Shaun Brodie (trumpet); John Collins (bass guitar); Fisher Rose, Pete Bourne (drums). Producers: John Collins; Dave Carswell; A.C. Newman. New Pornographers frontman A.C. Newman goes solo for this instant classic of slightly retro rock-pop. Clocking in at a little more than 30 minutes, 2004's THE SLOW WONDER is a gem--a rocking, orchestrated album that recalls the best tunes on the airwaves in the 1970s. A close inspection of lyrics reveals the sad underside to that era's optimism, however, with tales of failed novelists, bruised ideals, and bored romantics. Highlights--in a record full of highlights--include the strings and female harmonies of "The Town Halo," the dueling whistle chorus and compressed guitar on "Drink to Me, Babe, Then," the piano arpeggios and thunderous drums on "35 in the Shade," and the bursts of brass on "The Cloud Prayer." Through it all, Newman's pleasing vocal timbre makes him sound like his own one-man Beach Boys. Fans of Pornographers standouts like "From Blown Speakers" will eat this up, as this whole album retains that tune's evocation of the thrilling ache of half-remembered adolescent longing. It's all ceaselessly listenable--sunny and dark, hungry and satisfying in equal measure.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.128) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Newman pens melodies that seem to have sprung from the collective unconscious and then encases them in bright, lush power-pop arrangements."
Spin (p.109) - "His first solo album lets you better appreciate his knack for weaving glorious pop songs out of change-ups and mixed signals..." - Grade: A-
Q (p.121) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's a friskily succinct piece of work....It makes for a refreshing, bracing detour."
Mojo (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "A SLOW WONDER is as deep and dazzling as it is brief."
Uncut (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Crafty and clean-cut, Newman is a credit to an overlooked art; a big, baroque fusion of sharp garage, paisley pop and '70s sleekness..."
Magnet (p.66) - Ranked #4 in Magnet's "The 20 Best Albums Of 2004" - "[T]he odd cello riff and whistling solo aren't gimmicks - they're standard."

...Mr Slow is number 39 in the Mr Men book collection. He is a round shaped man and is light green in colour. He has a yellow round nose with a big white moustache and he wears a bright green hat.
The front cover of the book is white and has a picture of Mr Slow and the title in black lettering above this and the back cover is also white and has small pictures showing all the other characters available in the collection.
THE STORY
At the start of the book we are told a bit about Mr Slow, he lives next door to Mr Busy. He lives in a house which he built himself, it took him 10 years. Mr Slow also talks in a very very slow way and everything that he did was also done very slowly. We are told that if Mr Slow had a current cake for tea it took him until bedtime to finish eating it, he would eat it crumb by crumb and he chewed each...

...I bought myself a slow cooker a few months ago and realised that I had never used it, it just sat in my cupboard waiting for me to find the time to read the instruction booklet and start working out how it was used.
Eventually I got it out and decided to buy myself a cook book so as to get the best out of my new appliance. I bought the gina Steer one as it had some good reviews and I liked the way the recipes were laid out, they looked very clear and easy to read and the pictures made the food look very tempting!
What is great about the book is that there are about 150 recipes so there is great variation from soups, starters, main meals and even desserts. I wasn't aware that you could make desserts in a slow cooker, I thought it was mainly used for casseroles and soups but no! you can make all sorts!
The recipes I've used from...

... The slow cooker
We bought a slow cooker as had heard some brilliant reviews on them and Mrs B was desperate to try anything which made healthy, home-cooking easier and less time-consuming since Baby B came along. At first we were both dubious about leaving on an electric cooker all day whilst we went off to work or Mrs B took Baby B out to various baby groups, we had images of a huge electricity bill or a burnt out kitchen or maybe even both but this hasn't happened! Instead, we come home to beautifully cooked food which has taken minimal effort.
The idea of a slow cooker is to reduce time of cooking, so you just throw your veg in, cover it in stock and add whatever else you need, leave it on a low heat all day and then it's ready! It always tastes so much better too as it's been cooked for a long time enabling all...
