Mallrat, but the Offspring were hardly spring chickens at the time of this breakthrough album's release. They'd been slogging away since 1987, a span that allowed them to amass all the clever tricks showcased here, most notably the Latino-rap/moshpit-riff mega-hit "Come Out and Play". Just about every track on the disc (the band's third, if you were counting) keeps that careful balance between aggression and accessibility, from the surf-punk self- help rant of "Self-Esteem" to the airy ska-pop of "What Happened to You?" If Green Day are the 1990s punk equivalent of the Beatles, and Rancid its Rolling Stones, the Offspring might be its Monkees--remembered for nothing more important than simple, indelible pop. --David Sprague

Advantages: fun, quick, sends a message Disadvantages: not enought of it

Offspring know how to vary their music to reach practically everyone – apart from the hard-core pop princes and princesses. Their lyrics are catchy, fast and help you to relate to the guitar strumming’, drum banging’ soul that is deep beneath each and every one of us. The Offspring lyrics, unlike the wave of boy-girl groups that have sprung up recently (i.e. Briteny spears) whose sole purpose is to turn you on (which may not be a bad thing) as they are usually the beautiful people in our society, actually make you think and laugh and sometimes try to get a message to their fans via their songs. The bands image is probably the Pop persons answer to pure “mosher” music so to keep this image they have to add a bit of fun or Mickey taking to each song (very cunning move by the sales team)
The messages on certain songs are very obvious and thought penetrating One such song is called "What In the World Happened to You?". Which is about someone who used to be really smart but then took drugs and is now brain dead this doesn’t sound like it will be very funny and I know it’s not, but in a sick way it gets the message across. A bit of the song illustrates how clearly Offspring are trying to get the message (consciously or with out realising it) - "Before you started taking, you used to have a brain, but now you don't know the simple little things. I draw little pictures, I even use my hands, I try to explain, but you just don't understand”. With the tune added the seriousness is decreased (which would be bad for the bands image)
This CD is one of Offspring’s best and is up there with “IXANY ON THE HOMBRE” and “CONSPIRACY OF ONE” and goes way deeper than “AMERICANA” and is worth every penny. Or if you are a cautious buyer then try Napster or Audio Galaxy (also opinions on) The Album Time to relax- A basic intro to the album telling you how relaxing music is (sarcasm or what) Nitro- Tomorrow seems to be on his mind! Bad habit- hey leave them alone everyone has bad habits! Gotta get away- He or us have got to get away from him Genocide- A song with an amazingly fast guitar intro! Something to believe in- there is something to believe in (honest) Come out and play- You’ve Gotta keep them separated (who?) Self esteem-He's being used and abused, but he likes it that way. It’ll be a long time- Killboy powerhead - What happened to you- you used to be smart but then you took drugs and now you’re brain dead! So alone- a song using masses of guitar, drums and the word “so alone” Not the one- Fast paced guitar and drums – he isn’t the one is the message portrayed in this song Smash-he's just wants to be himself, no matter what anyone else thinks.
If you look at, say, AMERICANA, it is clear that something went wrong along the way. Like every other band of their type the band must remember what first attracted people to buying their CD’s – was it their speed, their catchynes or do they have to look for new “converts” from the pop world. The truth is Offspring just need to keep pumping out top quality albums such as “SMASH”, “IXANY ON THE HOMBRE” and “CONSPIRACY OF ONE” and not failed attempts at entering the pop world while retaining the “mosher” world such as “AMERICANA”
Thank you for reading my opinion on Offspring – smash. If I have “tickled your taste buds” for The Offspring then why not go to www.Offspring.com to find out more information about the band
Advantages: Some good tunes,. Disadvantages: A few fillers
...aptly titled 'SMASH'
Well smash isn't really the word destroy would be better, as this is what it did to the record of highest selling indie album, when it went over 10 million sales worldwide, never before or since has this amount records have been sold by an indie band.
After this they band slowly went downhill, with each following album being a bit more poppy and more like a diluted version of this their classic album.

The album comes in at 46 minutes, with 14 tracks.
TRACK ONE - TIME TO RELAX
This is a spoken word piece about how relaxing and soothing music is...
TRACK TWO - NITRO (YOUTH ENERGY)
... which is a very sarcastic and quite funny comment seeing how fast paced most numbers on this album are.
Such as this the real opening track, kicking in with 100 mph drums, these are soon joined ...

*= outstanding tracks
The first track is an intro to the album with a guy saying that its time to relax so grab a glass of wine and your favourite easy chair and this compact disc playing on your home stereo. This statement is kind of ironic considering the next track (Nitro). It ends with the statement that "music soothes even the savage beast". Very true I think and shows that The Offspring understand the ... ...with fast drum rolls. This track sets the pace for the album, it's fast, furious, fun and ultimately singalong-y. With chorus of "live like there's no tomorrow", it is as its subtitle states about youth energy.
The next track, 'Bad Habit', starts with a slow bass riff with slowly evolving feedback in the background. Dexter Holland starts singing, he sounds strained, I don't think that he is one of the best singers, but he is adequate for this style. ...

Well believe it or not the Album "Smash" from The Offspring has sold over 9 million copies worldwide making it the best selling independant album of all time. This album well deserves this title because it could not be any better. Released in 1995 this was the album that got the Offpsring's talent recognised by the world. Anyone out there who likes punk/metal then this is for you, no other album compares to this and it is well worth twice the asking ...

Advantages: brill songs tempo attitude Disadvantages: singer voice is a minor irritation
this is the album that made them famous and rightly so because it is leaps and bounds better than the first album which was called Ignition. Although the production is better the songs sound similar to each other because they don't change pace. It is 100 mile an hour all the way with the offspring. Keep 'em Separated and self esteem are the standout tracks but any track off the album could have got into the charts, thats how good the album is, a ...

Advantages: Last You A Long Time Disadvantages: Expensive In High Street
The smash album in my opinion is the best offspring album released from the group because it is more obscene and more rockin. Unlike there latest album smash gives you a punk rock feel and each song gets better and better each time you hear it. Offspring have been compared to bands such as Greenday and even iron maiden and if you like these sort of bands then the smash album is definitely for you. It will also last you forever. The price is also ...

This is an amazing album. Yep...it is. I remember
when this album exploded ontot the scene carving
the punk scene to its best in 1994 alongside 'Smash'
by 'theoffspring.' And when you listen to this
album, you will know why there is so much credit
given to this album and Greenday themselves.
That immature, refreshing punk that you hear from
this album is like a breath of fresh air, as obviously
Greendays music has changed (but warning was still
a good album), and the old stuff is just like a
refreshing walk down memory lane.
The songs are so memorable on this that you will be
humming, singing, air 'guitarin/drumming the tunes
all day. The CD cover is great, really dudey cartoons
and the pictures of the people themselves, Billie
Jo, Tre and Mike, are really funny and a nice little
picture of their ...

Album Notes
Offspring: Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar); Noodles (guitar, background vocals); Greg K (bass); Ron Welty (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Jason "Blackball" McLean (vocals). Recorded at Track Record, North Hollywood, California. All songs written by Offspring except "Killboy Powerhead" (The Didjits). Building off the success of its Orange County, California hardcore roots and a feature spot in snowboarding advertisements, Offspring is suddenly seeing more commercial success that it ever could have dreamed of when it was formed as yet another Southern California hard-core punk act in 1991. SMASH is a generous helping of guitar power-pop. The delightful Middle-Eastern surf guitar on "Come Out And Play" hides harsh sentiments in poppy guitar riffs. Singer Dexter Holland mocks the school systems that think the solution to school violence is to "keep them separated," to segregate rather than educate the kids about the dangers of carrying guns. As Holland advises his fans, "Hey pay no mind/If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time." Offspring's power is in writing anthemic guitar rock that effortlessly slips from genre to genre. From the humorous ska-flavored "What Happened To You?" to the sing-along guitar riff in "No Self Esteem," SMASH is by no means a smash hit, but it has certainly gotten the exposure this one-time hardcore band deserves.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (11/3/94, p.98) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Call 'em punks if you want to, but a song ["Come Out And Play"] this cannily designed, arranged and executed is worthy of the best rock-songwriting tradition..." Musician (8/94, p.90) - "...Fortunately it doesn't take a genius to appreciate Offspring's simple songwriting smarts...A nice shot of adrenaline from a socially concious syringe..." NME (9/3/94, p.51) - 6 - Good - "...Being dynamically punk and showing a wide perspective aren't mutually exclusive. When Offspring discover that, they'll be bloody dangerous..." Alternative Press (8/94, p.89) - "...Rarely has a band so dextrously combined such apparently discordant elements into such a delicious whole..."
