During the 1980s, Freddie Mercury--the flamboyant lead singer of Queen--launched a ... more
promising solo career that produced two wildly disparate albums, a handful of singles and contributions to other projects that are documented in this three-disc collection. While 1985's "Mr Bad Guy" finds Mercury's melodramatic vocal flair struggling to overpower his sometimes patchy songwriting and the dated Euro-disco production of Reinhold Mack, the singer rose to the campy heights of "Bohemian Rhapsody"--and then some--on "Barcelona", his grand, neo-operatic collaboration with Spanish diva Montserrat Caballe and one of the most deliriously ambitious pop albums of modern times. Both are available here in sharp, digitally remastered sound. The third bonus disc gives another broad outline of Mercury's talents, from the rare, surprising 1972/slightly pre-Queen Phil Spector tribute single, "I Can Hear Music" through his contributions to Giorgio Moroder'sMetropolissoundtrack, Dave Clark's musical theatre pieceTimeand the singer's delightfully overwrought remake of "The Great Pretender", a song he claimed as autobiography.--Jerry McCulley

Advantages: Some classic solo tracks Disadvantages: A collection which doesn't separate the wheat from the chaff
Let's be honest from the start of this review. This is not a collection for the casual, curious fan coming across Freddie for the first time. If you are that sort of person, then you should probably be looking at the more recent "greatest hits" style album that has just been released. For the more dedicated fan however, this is a decent package containing 2 complete albums - 1983's Mr Bad Guy and 1998's Barcelona, a collaboration with Monserrat Caballé - along with a bonus CD.
Disc 1 - Mr Bad Guy is probably Freddie's best and possibly best known solo album released in 1983 at a time when critics of Queen were lampooning the band's seeming loss of direction.
The album consists of 11 tracks and is alot poppier than Queen's output ever was. It's a mix of up beat dance and piano based ballads.

Being a collector of FreddieMercury and Queen works I put this Solocollection on my Christmas list just gone.
I was really pleased that EMI decided to release such a product as not many people appreciate the solo career Freddie had.
Mr.Bad Guy was a fantastic album and I feel very underated. When I played this album to my partner (not really a Queen fan) he loved it. I hope that people buying this Solocollection will also feel the same.
The whole Solo package offers three CD's in total, Mr.Bad Guy, Barcelona; a compilation of operatic tracks and a Bonus CD. It's a great selection and a wonderful opportunity to own the works of Freddie.
My favourite tracks include I Was Born to Love You and My Love is Dangerous. Anyone unfamiliar with Freddiessolo work may be surprised by the synthetic sound of these tracks, however, I ...
