skipping, not for cissies

Advantages: Cheap, Portable , good calorie burner
Disadvantages: needs a space where the rope wont catch on obstacles, noisy in a flat

Last year I took up jogging because my fitness levels had come to an all time low, flabby and lethargic. It was quite hard work but I kept at it and began to enjoy the fitter me. Then in December, it snowed. I could predict all my hard work coming to nothing as it was too slippery to run , so I went to the local sports shop and found a skipping rope. The instructions recommend supportive shoes and a softish surface . Our wooden floors are just right but smooth carpet is okay too. You could skip in the garden on earth or tarmac. At home I donned my running clothes and got ready to skip. My first attempt lasted about 3 minutes and involved me treading on the rope, catching my feet in it and hitting myself on the back of the head. Review of Skipping

Skipping

Advantages: great fitness, cheap workout, truly addictive!
Disadvantages: None that I've found

When I was one of the unfortunate full-time workers, working long hours with little free time, I dragged myself to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and I thought I was relatively fit. Then I decided my gym subscription wasn't value for money, so I quit and bought a skipping rope. Little children do this in the playground - how hard can it be? The first time I tried it, despite my believed fitness, I could not keep going for longer than five minutes. My calves ached, my lungs felt as if they were about to pack up and three hours later I still couldn't breathe without feeling it in my chest. I slowed down, I built up a routine and gradually increased the number of steps of each set. Now I do half an hour, five days a week to provide aerobic exercise and it's great! Isn't it boring? I would certainly prefer to be travelling around ...
