I have just listened to this album again today and it has such an emotional effect on me that I really feel what I have written cannot say enough to describe her voice, the power of her emotions, the very essence of who Eva Cassidy was. Please read and if you do not know her music, try it.
EVA CASSIDY
How can I begin to write a tribute to a woman with the voice of an angel that died before her time, and before she knew that the world would find her to be a source of inspiration, somewhere to go when they need uplifting, or somewhere to go when they need to cry but just can't make it happen. Her voice is enchanting. Her naturalness seeps through the songs and there is no pretentiousness at all. This is the voice she was born with, a true gift from God, not a tutored voice, not a voice that has to struggle to reach the high notes or choke on the lower notes. Eva Cassidy's album is described on the front cover as One of the Greatest voices of her generation. I thoroughly agree. That was a remark made by the Guardian, but as poor Eva never lived to read it, perhaps it is another Guardian that keeps us listening to the songs which haunt and fill our lives with such joy. All this for seven pounds ninety nine. Couldn't resist it and glad I didn't.
TRACK ONE Fields of Gold. 4.42 min
I can only describe this track as a young girl remembering a love that has past. A young
girl, whose thoughts of those days of innocence merit a song, and this is it. She recounts about past love, and sings in her own special way about thoughts we all have, thoughts that some of us don't have and wish we did. It shows her love of the countryside, the changing of seasons, fields of barley etc., talking about times when they walked in fields of gold, and how young people didn't make promises to each other, but they still walk in those fields nevertheless in memories. It is a beautiful song.
TRACK TWO Wade in the Water 4.02 min
This is a more up tempo song which shows that Eva was a believer, kind of a spiritual song. Eva sang for church services and this song is one that shows that her talents are equally as good in spiritual singing as they are in other genders of music. Simple singing, not too deep, not a song that would make you either cry or smile, but there none the less showing the different styles which she was capable of singing.
TRACK THREE Autumn Leaves 4.41 min
This is one of the most moving renditions I have heard of Eva's, it is a lovely song, all about Autumn and looking out on the world through the window. This song brings me to tears. She is reminiscing on Summer and the person that she loved through the Summer. Now that her lover has gone, and the days grow longer, and the way that Eva has put this song together is mystically beautiful. It is a striking song, about past love. The emotions that she uses in her songs are real ones, you can tell from her voice that she is not just singing words, but that she is putting her heart and soul into the songs, and amongst the tracks on this album, this is one that stands out above the others as a real sad song.
TRACK FOUR Wayfaring Stranger. 4.26 min
Let's go up tempo again and review this song. It is the old song which has been sung by many singers. I like Eva's rendition because it is so natural and her voice means what she says.
TRACK FIVE Songbird 3.43 min
Again, a sad song, although Eva looks back again and thinks about her relationship and how real it is and how the songbirds sing about their love affair, and how much she loves the person for whom she is singing the song. Her singing is pretty in this song, innocent in many ways, simple and almost childlike. She was a young singer and has made it in this song work in her favor. Simple love that believes in everything that love can give. Melodious and pretty.
TRACK SIX Time is a Healer 4.15 min
A kind of bluesy number, where Eva is looking back through photos of someone she loved, someone who had given her a lot of pain, and seeing once again in the photograph the goodness of the person she knew, rather than thinking the negative things, the way people do. People hurt us, make us cry, crush our dreams but at the end of the day we are all people that can live and forgive and remember that time heals. It really does in all ways.
TRACK SEVEN I know you by heart. 4,00 min
A typical Eva song. Her voice in this song is one of optimism, she sees things that we all see, such simple things like the positive side of what memories and thoughts should be. This is sung for someone that she knows by heart. That must be a nice feeling to have. I think we would all like someone that knows us that well. This song gives optimism and hope for a future. Nice song, beautiful voice.
TRACK EIGHT People get Ready 3.16 min
A slight change of pace again. Again this is one of her religious renditions about people getting ready to board the train to Jordan. Telling people that faith is the key to being part of something that is bigger than all of us. I see this as a big part of Eva's background as her church singing was a big part of her life.
TRACK NINE Oh, Had I a Golden Thread 4.50 min
Kind of churchy but a nice song none the less. It's about the desire to give people courage, innocence, and all of the things that every one of us would wish for each other. Nice though a little churchy.
TRACK TEN over the Rainbow. 4.46 min
Here she left the best to the last and by goodness did she. If I could have sung this song like she does, I would give everything to have half the talent. Take a well known structured song, and try and get away with singing it, and here she did not only do that, she did it better !!! Dependent on my mood, this single song can make me fill up with hope and aspiration, and on other days, I can cry to my hearts content because of the beauty of her song. I call this Eva's song, because the way she sang it, and the way that she plays guitar in it, it is really the cream of the crop. If you have never listened to her sing, listen to this one because it really is the most beautiful piece of music I have heard from a young singer for a very very long time.
I just wish Eva was alive. She died very very young, and deserved to know that the world would adore her work. This is my music write up for a lady I wish I had met, and shaken hands with. Listen to the last song and tell me you do not agree with me.
Thanks for reading.
