This album is an outstanding offering from a band that are destined for even greater things - possibly the debut of the year! I bought this album the week it came out due to the appeal of "Harder To Breathe", and I'm not going to lie - I was a tad dissapointed in how the guys couldn't keep that same rockier vibe throughout the album. And when I first heard "This Love", I just thought 'What is this?!'
I'm glad I stuck it out though, because its a definate grower of an album. You'll be dissappointed if you're looking for a rock album, as there's not much to cater for your taste. But, if you're looking for something a bit different, catchy and inspiring, this is the album for you. Actually, even if you ARE looking for a rock album, buy it anyway, it might have the same effect on you as it did on me.
The only way to describe their overall style is pop-indie-r'n'b-soul-jazz-funk-rock. It works perfectly, brought together by Adam Levine's beautiful voice, which can reach a good range of notes and is lovely to listen to. If anything, it is slightly whiney, but that doesn't spoil the album.
I think the influences come from artists like Stevie Wonder, Counting Crows and Jamiroqui - three very different bands/artists, which demonstrates the diversity of this album.
The album is perfectly produced but that doesn't spoil it at all. It keeps in the boundaries of what would define good songs, but you dont listen to it and think 'Arrgh, try something different', you appreciate the amazing quality for what it is.
Here's a short breakdown of the tracks:
"Harder To Breathe": Rather then setting the genre for the album, it sets the quality of the album, with a catchy chorus, good lyrics and a greaat rock riff. It really commands you to sit up and listen.
"This Love": An amazing catchy pop-funk song, which does take a couple of listens to like but even if you don't like it, it'll creep into your subconscious anyway, and you'll be singing the chorus all day. Just a warning ;)
"Shiver": A slightly toned down "Harder To Breathe", with a great riff, catchy if slightly rushed lyrics, and overall very pleasing.
"She Will Be Loved": Definately in the running for ballad of the year. A touching indie-pop ballad, with heartfelt vocals that might reduce you to tears when feeling fragile.
"Tangled": A slightly mellower track, with a touch of rock running through it. Well-written and well-produced, but it might be even better if it was slightly rawer.
"The Sun": One of the stand-out tracks on the album, a simply sublime track. Great lyrics, soul-y vocals and a mid-tempo beat which isn't boring at all.
"Must Get Out": Another of my favorites - a touching, meaningful, slightly raw ballad.
"Sunday Morning": Another song with a good, toe-tapping beat and a reasonable catchy chorus. Not the best on the album, but it does have a lot of stiff competition.
"Secret": Takes a while to get going, but is it worth the wait? It's pleasant enough, and again has a good beat and nice vocals, but doesn't reach any real climax.
"Through With You": A bit moodier then the previous 3 tracks, with a punchy guitar riff.
"Not Coming Home" I get the feeling the crowd noises are computer-generated! They only slightly spoil the track, but the song itself is a good, rock-pop song.
"Sweetest Goodbye": Featured on the Love Actually soundtrack, which says it all really - a tender, but not boring love song. Again, some wonderful vocals.
Overall, Songs About Jane is an amazing album set to become a classic, which can only be heard to be appreciated. I must stress that if you really want to know whether you will like this album, you MUST buy it. Don't just go off mine and others' opinions - I know that if I had done, I wouldn't have been able to appreciate the wonderfulness of this album!
Score: 9.5/10
