I can't believe nobody has reviewed this classic album! It was finally "re-mastered" and released on CD 4 years ago and I still think this album is a work of spine-chilling genius. The album is a classic mix of funky tunes, love songs and political messages.

Songs in the Key of Life is different from the four albums that preceded it; it's a ... more
maddeningly ambitious encapsulation of all the progress Stevie Wonder had made in that short space of time. This work covers Stevie Wonder's excessive work habits and recording methodology, his reliance on synthesizers, and other aspects.
Advantages: Classic songs Disadvantages: Track 18 still makes little sense to me
...mix of funky tunes, love songs and political messages.
Here's a list of tracks on the vinyl version.
1. Love's In Need Of Love Today
2. Have A Talk With God
3. Village Ghetto Land
4. Confusion
5. I Am Singing
6. If It's Magic
7. As
8. Another Star
9. I Wish
10. Knocks Me Off My Feet
11. Pastime Paradise
12. Summer Soft
13. Ordinary Pain ...possibly one of the best songs ever written, in my opinion. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It's such a great track to (try) and sing along to.
"Have A Talk With God" is about suicide and this shows Stevie's more than just an average soul singer, weighed down in sentimentality. "Black Man" and "Village Ghetto Land" also demonstrate his social conscience.

Track One is even more relevant today. My favourites are also "As" (covered by George Michael and M J Blige in 1998), "I Wish" (sampled by Will Smith for "Wild, Wild West"), "Pastime Paradise" (sampled by Coolio of course) and "Sir Duke". "Joy Inside My Tears" is also a fabulous love song. However, "Isn't She Lovely" is quite possibly one of the best songs ever written, in my opinion. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It's such a great track to (try) and sing along to.

The album cover is a swirling orange effect, with the title disappearing down what is basically an orange hole. It makes me feel a bit sick actually but I think it's to reflect the roller-coaster that is life!
This album is probably best obtained from a second-hand stall if you want it on vinyl (me, fussy?!) but the CD version is available from HMV for £20.
RE-MASTERED CD
There are extra features on the "re-mastered" version.
Here's a list of those tracks for your information. I haven't heard some of these (yet). I may indulge myself...

Advantages: Interesting to fans of the later stuff Disadvantages: Two good tracks missing
What hits is a compilation of the Chili Peppers early work previous to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, apart from the inclusion of Under the Bridge ? no doubt there to bump sales up. The first track, Higher Ground, is funky version of StevieWonder?ssong from Songsin the Key of Life, not what you would expect from the band who brought you ?Give it Away!?. The second track is the first of many cheesy songs on the album, funk metal hasn?t always been the Chili?s preferred style! Standout tracks are, Higher Ground, Backwoods, Knock Me Down, Show Me Your Soul and Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky. Mind you, why they bothered covering Jimmi Hendrix?s Fire I don?t know, as it?s a pretty poor version and not something one of the masters songs deserved. Overall though it?s a pretty good album and only two good tracks from the early days are missing. ...
Advantages: Quality of music & lyrics, artwork on cover Disadvantages: None
Every major music artist or band produce an album in their career that stands head & shoulders above all their other work. In most cases it is released during the peak of the career, usually a multi million seller & in some cases they go on to write material which is just as a good.
Of courses deciding which album is an artists' best is at best a very subjective matter, however to me classic examples of this is the Beatles album 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band', 40 years after it was released it is often regarding as the band's best work. It still sounds as fresh & exciting today as it did in 1967. Another example is Pink Floyd's 'Dark side of the moon', a massive selling album, so creative & a true masterpiece.
For StevieWonder it was his 1976 release 'Songsin the key of life' & Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is another ...
Advantages: Buy it, Play it, play it again, then play it again. Disadvantages: Comparing it to his newer stuff is so sad.
People have many different opinions on StevieWonder. For many he is best remembered for his early 80s music, songs such as I Just Called To Say I Loved You' and 'Happy Birthday'. Some have heard songs such as 'Superstition' and 'Signed Sealed Delivered'. But few seem to possess a StevieWonder album, especially one of his classics. 'Talking Book', 'SongsIn The Key Of Life' or 'Innervisions'. All of these are brilliant and worth owning, but my personal favourite is Innervisions.
Released in 1973, Innervisions is the perfect soul album. It combines funky dancealong songs with more meaningful lyrical numbers that show the irony of his blindness. As the album cover shows Stevie can see much more than most visually able men. When he sings on 'Visions' 'I know that leaves are green they only turn to brown when autumn comes around' you ...

Released in 1976, this double LP spent 14 of its 80 charting weeks at number one. From his sharp commentaries on American social history and pro-peace supplications to some of his most intimate professions of love, witness Stevie Wonder at a prolific point in his career, casting his music further beyond R&B, funk, and disco than ever before. Present here are some of Stevie's greatest hits in their original context: the widely-sampled horn swirls of "Sir Duke," comical baby-noise-laced jamming of "Isn't She Lovely" and fiercely poetic declaration of "As" still shine as brightly as ever. Perhaps less well-known are tunes like, "Joy Inside My Tears," a slow, entrancing, synth-vamp on love's redemptive powers, or the fast-grooving funkout, "Black Man," a compelling salute to America's pioneers of color. The keyboard sounds are as varied as ever, the bass as waggish as Bootsy, the arrangements a consummate preparation of melody and harmony. KEY OF LIFE is an inspired work in which Stevie marvels at life's unexpected miracles.
Album Reviews
Q (10/99, p.161) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Motown Records Of All Time - "...the apex of Wonder's creativity....A big record in many senses." Muzik (8/99, p.138) - "...[SONGS] best reflects [Stevie's] global influence on contemporary soul, jazz, funk, rap and pop....[it] speaks to the adult mind, politically, racially and emotionally. It shows how shockingly talented Wonder is..."
