Woody G: The Man Who Walked Out of the Dust Bowl
Review of Hard Travellin' - Woody Guthrie by  tel1

Advantages: Brilliant and Original Compositions
Disadvantages: A Bit Rough around the Edges For Modern Tastes

.... Guthrie was born into tragedy and his sister died early on, when the family home burned down (Woody’s daughter later died under similar circumstances). His parents business was to fail shortly after the house fire. No sooner had the young Guthrie picked himself up and started a band than his mother developed Huntingdon’s Chorea and was confined to an asylum in a semi-vegetative state. Woody married and headed for Texas about the time the Great Depression hit the US. He had already started another band when, in the mid-30s, the depression was compounded by the Great Dust Storms that blew into the mid-west. Millions of acres of prime top-soil were blown away in just a few years, mainly as a result of bad farm management. History records that tens of thousands of bankrupt farmers and cowboys left Oklahoma, Tennessee, Kansas and parts of Texas... Read review

The harder road
Review of Mermaid Avenue Vol.2 - Billy Bragg & Wilco by  harrison_simon

Advantages: Familiar, yet more adventurous
Disadvantages: Too much Bragg whining

...WHEN Nora Guthrie unearthed a stack of her father’s unrecorded lyrics, she took them to Billy Bragg, who, along with Wilco, recorded one of the finest albums of 1998, Mermaid Avenue. The lyrics dated from the period after World War II, when Woody Guthrie had returned from his service onboard a merchant vessel. They chronicle the period when the great folk singer was beginning to feel the effects of the Huntingdon’s disease which would eventually kill him. Mermaid Avenue revealed an unseen side of Guthrie, it saw him dreaming of sleeping with Hollywood celebrities on California Stars, talking nonsense to get his daughter to sleep on Hoodoo Voodoo and proposing to his wife on Hesitating Beauty. Wilco are basically the quintessential US rock band, coming across like a hybrid of the good-time sophistication of The Band together... Read review

Alistair Moock -- Fortune Street
Review of Fortune Street [Digipak] - Alastair Moock by  dblue

Advantages: For folkies everywhere
Disadvantages: Not for rockers

...Fortune Street is Bostonian Alistair Moock's fifth album and he presents nine original songs and one cover. The album was recorded in just five days and Moock says that "it was the most fun I've had making an album". The eponymous title track opens this album and highlights Moock's slight gruff quality to his voice. It's a sedate opener, played in the open key of E that is firmly in the Americana fold. Yin Yang Blues is a quirky blues and Woody's Lament is Americana again. These gentle acoustic sounds blend into Moock's understated guitar and Sean Staples' vocal. This is a Woody Guthrie tribute with some harmony that confirms Moock's citation that "Woody Guthrie is the reason I'm a songwriter". Swing That Axe is old style folk blended with jazz and is a well executed good time song. God Saw Fit To Make Tears is a lovely title... Read review
