this 15 track opus of booze fueled brewtality sees Guitarist/Vocalist Zakk Wylde in his finest hour, tracks like Born to loose, low town, and world of trouble bring hooks to the ear of any listener. this album features BLS's own rendition of Zakks own modeling with Ozzy osbourne "No More Tears"
1. Bored To Tears the albums opening track, exercising the bands bass guitar and guitar effects building into the face ripping guitar riffs, and within the 1st minute you know instantly what the bands about. Zakk shows his southern american rock influences in his vocals, and at 3:14 you know how hes built the name he has aquired as one of the greatest guitarists of this generation.
2. The Rose Petalled Garden this track demonstrates the bands abilty to merge a calm melodic intro to a heavy chugging chorus of wailing guitars and brutal rhythmns.
3. Hey You (Batch Of Lies) for every great album theres got to be filler, this song shows that zakk wanted 15 tracks on the album, for me this song is a bleak 5 chords and a few arpeggio fills. how ever, this is where the bands bassist is put to great use, underneath zakk and JD's beautiful verse guitar work, dave lorenzo lays intriguing melodies that piece the song together perfectly.
4. Born To Lose 4:23 of pure prime BLS brewtality. with zakks trademark harmonics and gut wrenching guitar solos alongside the bass power of a wrecking ball, they bring you, born to loose.
5. Peddlers Of Death as zakk is a pianist, he tries to incorperate all his ability and soul into each album, sonicbrew being no exception. begining with a soulful piano intro, and throwing the listener into a powerful and heartfelt 4 minutes of trademark black label crushing, and destroying riffs, and after a somewhat impressive solo, zakk leaves you on the piano to fade.
6. Mother Mary BLS putting the bass to use again with turbo distortion for an intro, and to lead the drums on every verse making each chorus that much more crushing with each chorus. this song really proves where zakk gets his vocal stylings, pure home grown southern rock n f***in' roll
7. Beneath The Tree ok, the last 20 minutes has been pretty heavy so time for a calm, slow track, but with the band wielding the motto "Strength, determination, mercilessness, forever" that would be getting off too easily, and 2:30, the band come round again n smack you in the face!
8. Low Down the albums highlight for me, if you want a taster of this CD, this is the track you just gott hear.
9. T.A.Z. so, your declared the worlds greatest heavy metal guitarist of the decade. so what do you do? show the world you can play just as fast and just as insanly on an acoustic guitar with out any effects. meh, i can do that i just dont want to................
10. Lost My Better Half for a BLS fan, think doomsday jesus from the blessed hell ride album. for a non BLS fan, think, doom gloom, more doom, chugging guitar riffs and some strange sounding guitars
11. Black Pearl Zakks best work at fusing the styles he loves, using key board and guitar techniques hendrix used before zakk was born, and the vocals zakk will carry to the end, soft sung words from the heart and as in true BLS style, just when you arnt expecting it, it comes round and brewtalises the listener.
12. World Of Trouble if theres a song to listen to when driving at 90mph down the motor way when everythings going down the drain, this song is it. to me screams, lifes a bitch, but lets get drunk.
13. Spoke In The Wheel so this songs un amped, unplugged and just zakk and his acoustic, a relaxing song showing the mans influences and him living his true potential.
14. The Beginning... At Last an upbeat track sporting the bands signature guitar masterwork, and zakks un missable lyrical conent with signs of guns n roses, and this songs shows what ozzy osbournes last few albums would be like if zakk had the full creative controll
15. No More Tears this is what i dont understand, zakk wylde wrote this song with ozzy osbourne in the early 90's. but yet he covers his own works for this band, but god do the BLS boys add a touch of destruction. this track was ozzys homage to his deceased friend, guitarist and the man zakk was successor to: Randy Rhoads, but BLS take this track, add their two cents and blow your head off with what these guys can do.
ok, so ive pretty much just bigged the album up, but that is my opinion, i would reccomend this album to any one who like metal, if you live it, its a nessesary to have this on your CD collection. any ozzy osbourne fan should hear this just to see where the writing power of ozzy axeman lies.
to me i can only sum this album up in the words of Zakk himself, Strength, Determination, Mercilessness, Forever
Advantages: Decent guitar work, good musicianship Disadvantages: Very mainstream, lower standard of songwriting, tires quickly.
I have been a fan of Zakk Wykde and his BlackLabelSociety for nearing 7 years or so, first really getting into them via albums such as "SonicBrew", "Stronger Than Death" and "1919 Eternal". Sadly though, after the former, Zakk and Co appear to go downhill.
When you compare the tracklisting from "SonicBrew" to that of "Mafia", you have quite a problem on your hands. You see, Mafia is barely recognisable as BLS except for the guitar solos. I am all for bands progressing, and trying new things, but this latest installment from Mr Wylde says to me that he has either forgot where his roots are, or is doing what he can to get more record sales. This comes as a disappointmentto me, after seeing BLS live, and hearing Zakk preach about how he will stay true to his roots and not "sell out".
Well sorry, Zakk, but looking at this album ...
