Or "Heir Kommt Die Sonne", as Rammstein sing it. Imagine if you will, the illegitimate child of Metallica and Kraftwerk: This is Rammstein!
Musically, we have an exceptionally good Electro-Metal band, all crushing guitars, mechanical beats and soaring samples. Over the top of this backing we have vocals which are powerful, deep, and in German.
Yes, that’s right, Rammstein have chosen to communicate their musical message to the world in their mother tongue. Wait! Don’t run! It actually works really well! Why no-one has thought of combining Metal with this truly guttural, harsh language, I’ll never know, but the end result is amazing.
OK I’ve got a confession to make at this point; I haven’t really bought this Maxi-CD, I’ve seen the video for this track on a promo tape, and I’m in the process of listening to the album, “Mutter”, for a later review. That should follow by the end of the week.
That said, were you to find the single and were curious about the band, I would heartily recommend it. The verse is all grinding guitars and guttural vocals. We really see the advantage of the language, Till, the singer being able to create a powerful vibe without resort to tawdry “Cookie Monster” impressions. Then the chorus; soaring, poignant, the synths take to the fore as Till sings the opening line of this review in a deadpan baritone.
Also, extra points for the video, which see the band as the (six) Dwarves slaving for a tyrannical Snow White. It’s hilarious, defusing a band which could easily be mistaken as being po-faced. As far as I can, though gather, most of their songs are sung with tongue firmly in cheek. However, without english translations, and only my rusty German to rely on, I can't be sure. (that's why I've rated the lyrics "Not Applicable".)
In closing, a great song from an amazing band, more will follow soon, I promise.

Advantages: Excellent and enduring song all round Disadvantages: German lyrics may be a turn off for a few, but just think of them as another instrument!
