for the similar Elizabeth Taylor In London. The Englishman needed to impress both producers and star that he was capable of conjuring an Italian sprightliness in his scoring, and as you'll hear, it takes only a few bars of "Secrets of Rome" for him to do so. The instrumental version that opens and closes the album in waltzing fashion is only bettered by the vocal version featuring Loren's sensual accented sighing. It features a classic romantic Berry melody that's hard to tire of. But this is by no means all there is to admire: "The Ballet" is a fast-paced musical portrait of the bustling city traffic, while "The Aggressors" captures both the nobility and ferociousness of the Colosseum Gladiators. There's also "Marcello", which floatingly suggests how sweet Loren's relationship was with her friend and actor Marcello Mastroianni. You can expect plenty of concertina and accordion throughout, but under that unique John Barry baton it's a lush, lackadaisical treat.--Paul Tonks

Advantages: Varied, well performed, quality music; informative booklet Disadvantages: None
...The music of JohnBarry is somewhat overlooked. Give me the choice between the revered John Williams and JohnBarry, and the latter would win hands down.
JohnBarry's music is varied in style; from the flighty The Dove to the haunting Mary Queen of Scots, from the familiar theme from the 1970s cult series The Persuaders to the mysterious The Deep, not forgetting the numerous James Bond themes and the powerful music from The Black Hole, there's something to please everyone.
This four disc set is great value for money and the music spans twenty years of JohnBarry's musical career. It comes with an information booklet telling the listener a little about JohnBarry and his music, along with some small details about each track.
I'm usually quite picky about what music I listen to, and certainly very discerning about what CDs I buy, but I...

Barry at his best Review ofDances With Wolves [Remastered] - Original Soundtrackby
JSpencer
Advantages: Beautiful rich melodies, compliments the film perfectly. Disadvantages: none
...JohnBarry has to be the worlds finest tunesmith when it comes to movie scoring. The guy has been writing great melodies since the early sixties - and won several oscars on the way. He won one for this moving score in which he gives the various characters of the film, including the wolf (Two Socks) befriended by Dunbar, their own theme. Dunbar himself has the incredibly moving title theme, a simple, haunting melody played with layered strings and cellos.
Theres a tremendous action piece for the buffalo hunt and exquisite pieces for the romantic interest and two socks.
Another stunner from Barry....

Advantages: It lets you give your own interpretation to the music Disadvantages: Sometimes it is better to see the picture first
...Music is the eyes of the soul. JohnBarry paints scene by scene
pictures for you in which you can imagine the huge liner itself.
Certain instruments indicate happiness or sadness while others
indicate diaster, trauma, the world in which the crew and passengers
have to cope.
You are brought into a world through musical introductions to the
main story by the light and shade of the orchestra.
It is up to you to decide your emotions regarding this soundtrack.
It is you who decides which will affect your thoughts and memories
after listening to the track.
JohnBarry both had vision and skill in finding triumph over diaster
and to find beauty in tragedy. Is it better for you to listen to the music
or go see the movie....
