I was introduced to the music of Gillian Welch by a friend recently returned from a road-trip across the Southern States of the US. Bursting with enthusiasm, "this is RIGHT up your street" he said, and handed me a copy of 'Soul Journey' - Welch's fourth, most recent album (released 2003).
On that intriguing recommendation I came home and put the CD on immediately. After only the first few bars of the opening track "Look at Miss Ohio" I'm whisked ... ...beats down on the open plane, spreading its pinky-orange glow all around... I'm transported.
I'd never heard of Gillian Welch before, so was surprised to learn that she is a hugely successful artist - both commercially and critically - in the States, and, increasingly, here in the UK.
