After seeing this CD advertised on the TV last night and being somewhat a fan of Russell Watson I decided today that I would treat myself and so I bought it. I am very pleased with my purchase as this is a lovely easy listening CD.
The cover of the CD is white and has a picture of Russell standing to the right hand side and the title in white lettering on the arm section of his picture. The back cover of the CD has a picture again of Russell standing with a microphone to the left hand side and the track list in black to the right hand side.
The tracks on 'People Get Ready' are:-
1. Me and Mrs Jones - This track has a swing feel to it and is a very well know song which he does sing very well and has kept to the original version instead of trying to make it different and spoiling such a good song. The band is also very good in this track and the saxophone is featured a lot.
2. If You Don't Know Me By Now - This is a ballad which has been covered by quite a few people but Russell has sang this song very well and has kept to the original tune but has made it slightly different by differing the harmonies and melodies slightly. It
is a very easy listening ballad.
3. Papa Was A Rolling Stone - The start of this track has a great instrumental which leads into a great jazz/ soul sounding song. I was not familiar with this song before hearing it on this CD so cannot compare it to the original. The vocals are very good and it is great to hear Russell singing in a different style.
4. People Get Ready - This song also starts off with a lovely soft instrumental which is then joined by a great vocal. The song is a ballad and also has a slight gospel feel to it. The lyrics are also very moving on this song.
5. Georgia - This song also has a swing feel and it is also quite slow in places. I am not too familiar with this song wither so I also cannot compare this to the original but I do like this version very much.
6. Backstabbers - This song has a feel good sound as there are a lot of different instruments used which have a great sound, it is nice to hear the variety of instruments and not just the usual. The beat is a little more up-tempo in this track.
7. New York State of Mind - This is a very slow song to start with a wonderful saxophone introduction which leads into the locals. It has a ballad feel but also at times it has a swing feel as well. It them picks up and sound slight jazzy with the instruments in the background.
8. Soul Man - This track is a very popular man and I like the fact he has sung the more up-tempo song. I love the James Brown version of this song but have to say Russell did sing this well but I feel he needed a little more power in his voice for the vocals.
9. In The Midnight Hour - This track is another very well know one. It is a soul sounding song and his vocals are great but I kept thinking to myself that his opera training was holding him back as he was taking too long over the pronunciation of a few of the words which did slight put me off.
10. Try A Little Tenderness - This song starts off very slowly but it is nice to hear Russell's voice without a lot of instrumental accompaniment. The song does start to pick up about half way through and it then seems to have a slightly faster pace. I personally feel this would have to be one which I am not too keen one but I cannot fault the vocals at all.
11. Heaven Help Us All - The beginning of this track has a jazzy feel. I am also not familiar with this song and have no idea who originally sang this song but I do like this version and towards the end it starts to have a gospel feel especially with lyrics and the vocals from the choir.
12. Louisiana 1927 - This begins with a lovely piano solo and has a very ballad feel and then is joined by the vocals of a choir. Russell then joins the song which stays as a ballad which has song lovely easy listening lyrics.
13. I Can't Stop Loving You - I beautiful ballad which is sung by both Russell and a choir. This again has some very lovely lyrics.
14. House of the Rising Sun - This song is quite a weird one for me. I starts off with a quite instrumental and then is joined with a very low and slow vocal. Russell sings this track very well and it also shows his range off very well. I do know this song but I am not very keen on it as it seems slightly depressing. Sung well but depressing!
The variety of songs on this CD will make it appeal to a wide audience. The vocal from Russell on each and every track are all excellent and the songs really do show off his talent and how much of a range his voice has. He has shown on this album that he is definitely more than an opera singer.
A lot of the tracks feature a wonderful gospel choir which do add to the songs which they feature in. Also the orchestra does deserve a lot of credit for their contribution to the entire album as they have made a lot of the songs sound as good as the original ones.
There is a small booklet inside the CD cover which features several pictures of Russell in different poses and shows just how well he looks after his second brain tumour operation. In this booklet you will also find details of the songs featured and also Russell say thank you to a lot of people which have helped him to make this album and he also pays credit to all the musicians and choirs singers which also feature on the album.
This album was released on 17th November 2008 and was released by Decca Music Group Limited. I paid £9.97 for my copy today from Tesco but I have seen the same CD for the price of £10.97 in other shops so do shop around for the lowest price.
I recommend this easy listening CD to all fans of good music and definitely fans of Russell Watson.
