Soul Surfing - Elliott Murphy

Advantages: beautiful melodies, great guitarist, vocalist, acoustic
Disadvantages: if you are into dance, very upbeat music then this isn't for you.

...I absolutely love Elliott Smith. He is one the most influential, beautifully talented acoustic artist around, and as a musician myself his songs have true meaning and inspriation. This self-titled album is soothing, and a great pleasure to listen to. It's less polished and commercial than his other albums, but still has some brilliant classics such as 'coming up roses' 'needle in the hay' 'clementine' 'southern belle' and so many more, I could go on. Ever single track (like his other albums) are beautiful, and touch your soul, they reveal and paint the picture of his hard, pained but interesting life.This low production album is mezmerizing, and although takes a few listens to appreciate each song individually, is truly worth buying and having in the collection. Advantages: Compilation of some of the Eels' greatest tracks.
Disadvantages: No need for die hards.

...The Eels are technically a band, but without the mighty E (Mark Everett) they would never have existed. The man is an extraordinary songwriter, and the albums he's created over the years are brilliant. You can see an evolution through the timescale of the band. This 'Best Of' would be a good introduction to the band, and does have some excellent songs on there, particularly their quirky cover of Missy Elliott's 'Get Your Freak On', which I was lucky enough to see live. It is set out chronologically, so starting with Novocaine for the Soul the album takes us to songs from the most recent 'Blinking Lights' album. With 24 tracks, this is excellent value for money. Although a great product, die hard fans like myself will already know and love all the tracks so it may not be worth your while.... Read review

...this is a fantastic album from a fantastic band. a sucessful punk band with bagpipes acordians and tin whistles. it works really well recorded live on st patricks day in front of loads murphys fans enjoying the festivities. the intro track is the infamous "Lets Go Murphys" then it kicks into many of their hits. such as Amazing Grace, Wild Rover John Law and barroom hero. 1.
