Album Notes: Personnel: Marc Johnson (bass); Pat Metheny (acoustic, electric & 42-string Pikasso guitars); Bill Frisell (acoustic & electric guitars); Joey Baron (drums, tambourine). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. With THE SOUND OF SUMMER RUNNING, bassist Marc Johnson has assembled a landmark quartet of such magnitude as to rival his legendary Bass Desires group of the mid '80s. Returning from that group is crafty guitar pioneer Bill Frisell. The two new additions are contemporary jazz guitar master Pat Metheny and the always adventurous percussionist Joey Baron. This list of musicians constitutes a "dream band" if there ever was one. Metheny and Frisell are locked in a beautiful dance as their signature sounds bob and weave around Johnson's deep foundation. Baron's stark percussive stabs and shimmering colors add just the right turmoil to the mix. The music is nothing short of mesmerizing in it's exploration of tonal colors and depth of creativity. The breezy freshness of "Faith In You" sets the tone, as the two guitarists alternately fly and support each other. A myriad of directions are explored from here: western-flavored folk ("Ghost Town," "With My Boots On"), a bluesy Chicago shuffle ("Union Pacific"), a sleepy mid-western groove ("Porch Swing") and colorful avant-garde explorations ("The Adventures Of Max And Ben"). Fans of Metheny's ECM days will enjoy the soaring "Summer Running." All of this with the quirky slant you would expect from this cast of magical sound-smiths.
Album Reviews: Down Beat (3/98, p.48) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...even as the disc stirs pastoral familiarities, the program offers a great breadth....cinematic in approach, relentless in its investigation of melody, rife with opportunities for reflection..." The Wire (3/98, p.55) - "...an insidiously seductive set of rock-inflicted jazz compositions, which negotiate some odd but plausible chord sequences....the group reaches sound combinations that are full of rich possibilities....a crafty set...persuasively played..." Musician (4/98, p.86) - "...an aural and emotional oasis in a desert storm of jazz scholasticism....a musical and geographical whistlestop tour through the rural outposts of Americana, equal parts jazz and folk, with an overlay of what may loosely be called country..." Entertainment Weekly (3/5/98, p.81) - "...bassist-composer Johnson has created sounds so gentle, wholesome, even magical, they evoke a country summer childhood. This pastoral sweetness, rare in jazz, is beguiling..." - Rating: B-
Advantages: Lovely, varied songs that make you smile. Disadvantages: When you have it on repeat as much as I have, you might annoy your neighbours...
...In Between Dreams
This is one sublime set of songs. Better Together kicks off the album with a slow summer style that calls you in and chills you out without any apparent effort. Simple lyrics and a funky, catchy, guitar based song that makes me want to describe it as "plinky plonky". I know. It's a ridiculous way to describe a piece of music, and quite unacceptable I imagine in most music loving circles, but this is my review, and two weeks away from giving birth and having just lost half a tooth (think I swallowed it - eek!) I think I can use whatever language I want to describe this wonderful musician. Except Swahili or Russian. Don't speak those.
I love this album. My nephew was born to the sound of Jack singing merrily. It's a beautiful album with some amazing songs and the added bonus that they are all so different in...

Advantages: Great for Bolan fans Disadvantages: none
...'s infatuation with his new found electronic and raunchier guitar sound. For all that this new idea infatuated Bolan it was his love of acoustics' and the transformation of his composing from this to electric that was rally his new baby.
10. Solid Gold Easy Action
Definitely one of the weakest tracks and I sometimes think it was just rushed out to soon in an effort to try rekindle what was rapidly becoming a flagging career. It did not do too well chart wise and failed to rekindle the spark.
11. By the light of the magical moon
Yet another journey back to pre T.Rex times, and a pleasant little number which although still contains some references, also shows signs of marc's move from acoustic.
12. Jeepster
A sexy vibrant and rocky number which gets you really going, there are however some very strange pronunciations going or should I...

Advantages: Light, summery music Disadvantages: Can flow over you at times, and feel like background music
...of his own song “Crying”.
There are times when the album seems more like easy listening than anything else – “Suddenly” has Burt Bacharach style orchestration, and you could probably dance something like the bossanova to it.
One of the songs which doesn’t work for me is “It’s happening with you”, which sounds like a take-off a la Austin Powers. There’s too much in the song, as well – the Indian sitar-style solo sounds out of place and overall it’s too messy.
My favourite track is “Simple”, with its lovely, hymn-like quality. It has a sparseness and a, well, simplicity, that's just perfect - definitely an example of a song where less is more.
“Invincible Summer” is not my favourite lang album, but it is a strong album (the ‘invincible...
