Mamma Mia is a musical based on the songs by Abba. This is a review of the CD which has the original cast recordings from the musical. Before I start, I would like to say only get this CD if you have seen the musical. If you like Abba music then get an Abba CD. Listening to this CD before watching the musical would spoil it. Fun this ain't

Advantages: Gavin Lee
Disadvantages: Uninspired music and lyrics

...is good pastiche, and 'A Saint She Ain't' certainly ain't good pastiche. Written in a style reminiscent of film musicals of the 1940s and accompanied by piano (possibly two pianos, judging from the sound of the overture), the show features thirteen different songs which echo the list songs, novelty numbers and lovestruck duets remembered fondly from so many Hollywood singalongs. The rhymes and the sure things get more ridiculous as the song goes on and the tune is simple enough to throw attention entirely on to the lyrics, so this track is rather good fun. Is That It?

Advantages: Great music, showcasing Jackson at his best
Disadvantages: Not a soundtrack album, just a marketing tool

The cinematic release opens it up to more people than had tickets for the shows at the O2 and whilst we may only get to see the rehearsals rather than the full on show, it’s a last opportunity to see Michael Jackson doing what he has always done best – put on one heck of a show. ...“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”. This is a great high tempo pop tune with a funky bass beat that it wonderfully typical of much of Jackson’s output. It bounces along wonderfully and it’s the kind of song that gets your feet tapping. That said, at just over six minutes long and containing a number of repetitions of the chorus, it does get a little repetitive after a while, as there isn’t a lot of variation in either the music or the lyrics.
