Mamma Mia is a musical based on the songs by Abba. This is a review of the CD which has the original cast recordings from the musical.
Before I start, I would like to say only get this CD if you have seen the musical. If you like Abba music then get an Abba CD. Listening to this CD before watching the musical would spoil it.
That said, if you have seen the musical then this CD is a must buy. This is a chance to relive those amazing memories of ... ...As I have said, Mamma Mia is a musical based on the songs of Abba. If you have not seen the musical then I would thoroughly recommend it. The songs were written before the musical which means the story had to fit in around the songs. This is done brilliantly in the musical and sometimes it feels like the songs were written for the story not vice versa.

...The first time I saw Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was in early 2000 in Thailand. But I only had a glimpse of the beginning. Since it wasn't available in Thailand it wasn't until 2007 that I got my own copy and watched the full version. To start, Donny Osmond made a nice rendition of the familiar Any Dream Will Do and all throughout the movie I think his performance was just absolutely head-turning. Maria Friedman's narration creates ... ...I've seen the DVD several times and everytime I feel more excited. The application of different musical genres from Afro to rock, hip-hop and pop were all cunningly devised to create variation, cultural fusion, revelry and surprises as if using different fabrics woven to create a masterpiece of tapestry. ...a cast! what a soundtrack! Hairspray is very lucky that it got remade otherwise so many people would have missed out on such a wonderful soundtrack. A lot should be said about the great casting efforts which made it possible. Most people rushed out to see such a great hollywood cast in what seemed an odd musical for them. I mean, Travolta as a lady? But what a surprise! Each and everyone of them was able to hold a note succesfully and pull together ... ...i play this on my ipod all the time and i end up bopping along and often looking a little odd on the bus but it just lightens my mood immediately! ...film, appears to hold a secret that everyone in the film seems to want to know. By the time you get to the end of this very long film neither the viewer nor any of the cast appear to know what this AMAZING secret is. The film is burdened by plot changes, an awful script and the general feeling that none of the cast appear to enjoy being part of the film. Add to this the terribly annoying background music, designed to add mystery to the film, and ... ...wooden that if it rained on set the actors would rot. When the camera is covered in sand (which it frequently is throughout the film, obscurring the actual scenes) it is a blessing. However the fight scenes are quite good. I never did figure out why there appears to be thousands of horses in the film and only a couple of camels though.
