When my wife was struggling with ideas as to what to get me for Christmas, I was aware of this compilation fron The Housemartins & Beautiful South, and suggested she get it for me. However, I hadn't looked closely at the tracks on the CD, which if I had done probably wouldn't have asked for ... Read review

Heaton is as quintessentially English as they come. Given his service to pop over the past 20 years, he's fairly valuable too. But he's certainly not the shiny sort, "bling" was just the sound a football made when it rebounded off rusting goalposts in the park when he started making records--his value is more akin to a warm mug of tea and a custard cream from the corner shop on a rainy afternoon. For a newer generation perhaps only familiar with the likes of The Beautiful South's "Perfect 10" it's worthwhile going back to the beginning to see why. The Housemartins (also the all singing--if not all dancing--apprenticeship for superstar DJ Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim) were a very fine singles band indeed, rushes of acoustic pop and Humberside barbershop harmonies with all the keenness that youth can afford. A virulent "Five Get Over Excited" and "Happy Hour", alongside peerless a capella cover "Caravan of Love", stand testament to an all too brief career. This is where the Beautiful South took up the reigns with a more mature, but no less catchy or vocally impressive, output, spinning timeless comforts like "You Keep It All In", "A Little Time" and "Old Red Eyes Is Back". Soup is the first time the work of the two bands has been collected onto one disc and while 22 tracks is never going to do justice to such an expansive back catalogue, it's a splendid starting point. --James Berry

Advantages: A little bit of Housemartins Disadvantages: Regurgitated Beautiful South
...it is pretty much condensed soup from The Housemartins, and reheated soup from The Beautiful South.
~~~~ Track Listing ~~~~
Housemartins
1. Flag Day
Unmistakeable Paul Heaton vocals but rather sombre number.
2. Happy Hour
Undoubtedly the Housemartins greatest ever song. This has a much more upbeat and happy tone to it.
3. Think for a Minute
To much like Flag Day for my liking. One to avoid.
4. Caravan of Love
Another classic Housemartins ... ...on this album.
5. Five get over excited
One of the better tracks on the album but I want quantity as well as quality and sadly there isn't enough.
6. Me and the Farmer
Another decent track but same comments as before apply.
7. Build
Another decent track but I want more.
Beautiful South
8. Song for Whoever
A decent track to start the Beautiful South part of the album, but the problem with all these tracks is they have all been included on ...
Advantages: Clever, catchy pop Disadvantages: A bit nerdy and twee at times
I was never a big fan of the Housemartins (a bit nerdy) or the Beautiful South (too twee) but feel more kindly towards them after seeing main man Paul Heaton play Stoke's Sugarmill the other week. I'm not a fan of his bands and didn't know his solo material yet had a really good time.
This greatest hits collection contains the condensed Housemartins (only seven tracks) and the cream of Beautiful South (the remaining 15 songs).
From the HMs you ... ...love", while from the BS hits such as "Rotterdam", "Don't marry her" and "Perfect 10". (All but "I'll sail this ship alone", "36D", "Prettiest eyes" and "Just a few things I ain't" were on the "Solid bronze" collection, I have to point out).
After seeing Heaton I actually sat down and read his lyrics. Thus I had forgotten the rude word in "Don't marry her" that lifts it above a soppy love song or that Heaton himself had drink problems, which probably ...
The best and I mean the best of the Housemartins and Beautiful South. Nice easy listening to music from one of the best bands ever to come out of Hull. With all the greatest hits like Caravan of love and Happy hour from the Housemartins and Don't marry her and Perfet 10 from The Beautiful SOuth. A must have for any fan.
Additional notes
Album Notes: This long overdue greatest hits compilation brings together the work of songwriting superduo Paul Heaton and David Rotheray, and encompasses over twenty years of indie Brit pop quirkiness. Housemartins tracks range from breakthrough single 'Happy Hour' to commercial hits 'Five Get Over Excited' and 'Caravan Of Love.' Meanwhile the Beautiful South's selections provide an excellent overview of the band's unique brand of bittersweet pop, including classic tracks such as 'Rotterdam' and 'One Last Love Song.'
